fenderfour Posted August 25, 2005 Posted August 25, 2005 Has anyone had experiences with Singlespeed MTBs? I was on the Tapeworm the other day and realized that I hadn't shifted at all. It got me thinking about a simpler, lighter alternative. Quote
lummox Posted August 25, 2005 Posted August 25, 2005 it is all i ride. surly. 32x16. nuff said beeyotch. Quote
fenderfour Posted August 25, 2005 Author Posted August 25, 2005 So is there any constructive input? Â Don't get me wrong, the opportunity to be like Lummox for the sole purpose of being like Lummox (at least in one way) would be an enticing proposition for anyone in my lowly position, but what works for Lummox may not work for all. Jim Posted August 25, 2005 Posted August 25, 2005 Single speed can be fun for the commute but for a MB doesn't seem practical unless it's mildly rolly and w/o much steep elevation gain. Granted I'm no expert but the rides I go on are mostly a lot of grinding uphill (5,000+ ft) and then traversing and downhill. With a single speed on these trails you would be pounded into pudding on 15 mi uphills or not able to keep up on the fast, big ring, traverses and downhills. No single speed would serve well on both. olyclimber Posted August 25, 2005 Posted August 25, 2005 Single speed bikes are great. So are pogo sticks and hula hoops. Quote
archenemy Posted August 25, 2005 Posted August 25, 2005 Thank god. I was wondering when this semi-educational thread was going to degenerate to my level. Good to see you oly Quote
mec Posted August 25, 2005 Posted August 25, 2005 i was out biking and ripped my rear derailler off, had to turn it into a single speed for the rest of the way home. Otherwise it would have been a long walk. worked great for that  however, going up and down hills i like having the options of swapping gears. especailyl since I am not in good enough shape to make it up the hill in anything but the low gears... archenemy Posted August 25, 2005 Posted August 25, 2005 No wonder minx has been looking at your pics. Quote
graupel Posted August 25, 2005 Posted August 25, 2005 For more trials like riding, where you are dealing more with uphill or precision slow travel, single speed is pretty much standard. It also holds up better for running over logs and general bashing. Quote
Cobra_Commander Posted August 25, 2005 Posted August 25, 2005 you should get a fixed-gear rather than a single-speed, get a couple of tattoos on your calves, put on some jean cutoffs, and you're set. Oh wait you have to scowl a lot too and carry around a vhf radio. Quote
fenderfour Posted August 25, 2005 Author Posted August 25, 2005 No wonder minx has been looking at your pics. Â Bacause he has 'roid nads? Quote
barjor Posted August 25, 2005 Posted August 25, 2005 I used to have that big leg muscles but it made my penis look small so I stoped working out. Now I just wish I could lose this beer belly. Quote
