espirita Posted July 6, 2005 Author Posted July 6, 2005 I heard a couple years ago that there were a few towns along the STP route that hated the event. So much so that some people would go throw tacks, broken glass, etc. onto the race area. Has anyone else heard of this? Does it still happen? I was warned of this. Quote
Dechristo Posted July 6, 2005 Posted July 6, 2005 I throw squid. I throw down a few. I throw up a spew. Quote
jon Posted July 6, 2005 Posted July 6, 2005 When I was 15 and doing the STP my friend broke the world bonking record on the second day thanks to a lobster dinner at the protest of his father. Homeskillet made it like 20 miles and just disintegrated. Quote
thelawgoddess Posted July 6, 2005 Posted July 6, 2005 I actually found some STP training films, fast forward to about 3 minutes and find out how to retaliate against the person who took the last Luna bar at the feed zone. http://www.cascadeclimbers.com/Crash2.wmv but, um ... shouldn't you do that before the finish? Harry_Pi Posted July 9, 2005 Posted July 9, 2005 #1 - It's too late for last minute advice. At this point, you're legs are ready or they're not. Hello capitalist! Not really concerned about my legs, just the ass transplant afterwards. Thank you for allow me to post opinion. Quote
espirita Posted July 11, 2005 Author Posted July 11, 2005 To Marie and anyone else who is interested: I made it!! It’s a great ride and very well supported, so I’d highly recommend it. Sunshine on Saturday Rain on Sunday Food stops Gold Wing Touring Association escorts Other riders “Mostly flat” – yeah right! Freaking hills!! Winlock HS Gym Directions to Winlock HS Gym ("Turn left at the only stoplight in Napavine." Me to police officer: "Is this right, because I don't see a stoplight." Police officer: "Yeah, they just took that out." ) Dogs that chased me! I’ve heard a lot of people complain about the crowds, but I actually liked having lots of other people around. Riding your bike down a country highway by yourself would be a little scary with cars zooming past, and just about all the other riders are very cool and courteous. Didn't see anyone climbing in Tenino but then again I was pretty much in a trance by then. The pool was closed! I guess the heater broke or something? No tacks or scary non-riders trying to mess with the riders!! The only thing that happened was, in the Portland City Limits, this car drove by and the punk sitting in the passenger seat would suddenly scream at the riders (including me), presumably to startle them and make them fall. This was at around mile 195, and I was so out of it that it didn’t really register until 30 seconds later. I was going pretty slow on my mountain bike (my riding partner was drafting me the whole way on her road bike!) and thought other riders were gonna get pissed, especially on the hills, but, if they said anything (other than “on your left”) they would say stuff like, “You’re almost there!” and “You’re doing great!” which was pretty cool. Cyclists rock!! Thanks for all the advice, esp. the red potato thing (those are bomber!). Quote
thelawgoddess Posted July 11, 2005 Posted July 11, 2005 very cool, and glad you enjoyed it. a friend's son did it on his mtb last year and liked it a lot as well. after reading your tr, i'd like to do it some time, too. Quote
Kitergal Posted July 11, 2005 Posted July 11, 2005 Espirita CONGRATULATIONS!! Good job girlfriend! I'm totally impressed, and totally sold on doing this next year! YEAH FOR YOU!! Quote
layton Posted July 11, 2005 Posted July 11, 2005 nice! hey, i hope it was scenic. my only exerperience from portland to seattle is on I-5 and i feel like gouging my eyes out. Quote
espirita Posted July 11, 2005 Author Posted July 11, 2005 hey, i hope it was scenic. When you say "scenic", are you talking about the 1000s of guys in spandex bike shorts? Actually it was pretty nice - there were a couple of long stretches of just trees and I would hit a trance or fixate on the numbers on the road spray-painted for the construction crews. Quote
syudla Posted July 11, 2005 Posted July 11, 2005 Death ride on saturday 7/9 south of Tahoe. 149 mi, 7 mtn passes, umpteen thousands of climb, 2700 riders. Quote
