Jim Posted September 27, 2004 Posted September 27, 2004 A friend and I ran up Mt. Forgotten yesterday. Perfect day and the upper ridge was just above the clouds when we got to the meadows. A dude and his girlfriend came by as we paused to take a few pictures. He had a shaved head, big pack, hiking poles, big mountaineering boots, and a trendy tribal tatoo on his arm. We chatted a bit before we took off for the summit and they head back down. As he passed me I noticed what looked to me like a speargun strapped to the side of his pack. I asked him what that was and he said it was a "mossback" for bears and hillbillies(?). Not familar with the latest inovations in firearms I asked for some more information. He said it was a lightweight 12 guage shotgun and that he was not only concerned about black bears but grizzlies. Whoa! WTF? Quote
Jim Posted September 27, 2004 Author Posted September 27, 2004 Dunno - the gun had no stock, just a black pistol grip, a silver and black barrel. Pretty compact. I thought it a bit wierd to be packing in the backcountry of WA. Quote
ashw_justin Posted September 27, 2004 Posted September 27, 2004 I thought chicks dig guys who carry shotguns around in the woods? Quote
fleblebleb Posted September 27, 2004 Posted September 27, 2004 I'm almost willing to bet 'Jim' is not a chick, so cut him some slack willya Quote
Ducknut Posted September 27, 2004 Posted September 27, 2004 sounds like a street sweeper. sounds like a bad mofo Quote
Greg_W Posted September 27, 2004 Posted September 27, 2004 Mossberg riot shotgun. Nice little unit. Quote
Jim Posted September 27, 2004 Author Posted September 27, 2004 Yo Greg - is it legal to cart this thing around? Not that I was gonna ask the dude. Quote
iain Posted September 27, 2004 Posted September 27, 2004 I think it's the barrel length more than the grip that matters, violating the former can come with a hefty prison sentence if I'm not mistaken. Quote
rbw1966 Posted September 27, 2004 Posted September 27, 2004 Pistol grips on shotguns are perfectly legal. Sounds like he was packing a Moosberg 500, 12 guage shotgun. Its also legal to carry one in the BC, as long as you're not in a national park. Quote
rbw1966 Posted September 27, 2004 Posted September 27, 2004 I don't think so. US military uses the remington 870. Quote

Jim Posted September 28, 2004 Author Posted September 28, 2004 I didn't pull it off his pack to take a good look, but this looks like the item. Quote
