Anyone here a marathon runner?

Recommended Posts

Anyone know the website for this run? It seems to be held by the Oregon Road Runners Club (same people who do the Portland Marathon), but I can't find any info.

I've never heard of ORRC putting on a marathon. They do however put on a 20k and 50k around Hagg lake in February. Could this be what you're thinking of? It would not qualify you for Boston but looks like a fun and muddy event. ORRC website is: http://www.orrc.net/

I've never heard of a marathon in Seaside but there is a marathon in Newport, OR in June. This would not help you with qualifying unless you were trying for 06. http://www.newportmarathon.org/

In addition to the Portland and Seattle 'thons there is a marthon in Victoria which is a week after Portland. I wouldn't recommend doing both, but if you forwent Portland it'd give you an extra week of training. http://www.royalvictoriamarathon.com/

There really isn't a ton of marathons in the PNW so you don't have that many choices here. MarathonGuide.com lists most marathons in the US here:

Re recovery: I'd say any less then 8 weeks between 'thons is really pushing it. 8 weeks would give you 3 weeks to recover, 2 to train and 3 to taper. Everyone recovers differently and if you don't want to run these at your fullest potential you may be able to get away with less. Elite marathoners seems to usually have almost 6 months between their marathons. Eg, none of the US mens olympic team will run a marathon between the trials in Feb and Athens later this month.

I'd strongly urge you to go to the library and pickup Advanced Marathoning. The book is useful regardless of how fast you wish to run. If nothing else it'll make you aware of the hardwork required to run a decent marathon.

I ran the NY marathon in 2002 on no training (my first and only one to date). I paid for it bigtime. I used to be a decent middle-distance college athlete and thought I could easily handle a marathon. I just kept on doing my usual 5 mile runs 3-4 times a week. Anyway, I went through the half in exactly 1.30 and then blew up completely. My calf cramped up, my knees kept locking, and my nipples were bleeding. I limped the last half and finished in 3.57. The worst part was that I got strep throat after it, my IT band was screwed up for a couple of months, and I was basically not able to do any physical activity for about a month afterwards.

I've humbly learned my lesson and am now coming around to also wanting to qualify for Boston. I intend to run the Capital City marathon in Olympia next May. It's a flat course that's certified for Boston, it has only a couple of hundred finishers, and it's run in May so hopefully the weather will be decent. All of these factors are super important and of course training properly. Best of luck.
