President rooting for fellow Texan

Associated Press

ABOARD AIR FORCE ONE -- President Bush predicted Friday that Lance Armstrong will win the Tour de France -- and added with a smile that he will triumph in his own race for re-election.

Bush fed his new passion for bicycling by watching the Tour on Air Force One's TV screens, rooting for fellow Texan Armstrong during a punishing stage through the Pyrenees mountains.

Asked by The Associated Press whether he thought Armstrong would pull off a record-breaking sixth straight tour win, Bush flashed two thumbs-up.

"He's going to win and I'm going to win," Bush said en route to Florida and West Virginia -- two critical states in re-election campaign.

"There's no need to worry about either race any more," Bush said with a wave of his hands and a grin.

Armstrong finished second in Friday's stage, leaving main rival Jan Ullrich struggling behind. He advanced the from sixth to second in the overall standings.

Bush has been following the July 3-25 race since it started, said White House spokesman Scott McClellan.

The president gave Armstrong a ride aboard Air Force One in August 2001, after the cyclist won his third tour. Armstrong presented Bush with a bicycle he had used competitively during a visit to the White House.

The day Armstrong hitched a ride on the plane, Bush had had his annual physical, which showed he had a resting heart rate of 43 beats per minute. Armstrong marveled at the statistics, putting his own pulse at 35.

That was before Bush started bicycling himself.

With his knees causing him increasing pain, Bush switched to mountain biking earlier this year.

It's a different genre of cycling. Whereas Tour de France racers ride light, fast bikes, mountain bikers ride heavier, knobby-tired bicycles over dirt and obstacles.

I seem to remember reading Lance's political views were pretty dumb, but I certainly still want him to whoop euro ass.

well stated...bush can suck it. t-minus 6 more months of his dumb ass in office! rockband.gif

If Bush can't win without polishing himself up by rubbing against celebrities, he shouldn't win at all.

Does that apply to Kerry/Edwards at Radio City Music Hall the other night? Seems to me the D team is more adept at the celeb game. Looks like your blinders are on... once again.

What a damn cool president!! Yeehaw… Maybe next year he'll take up climbing!

This is an intriguing thought. Let's consider Bush's track record in life thus far and extrapolate to what kind of a climber he would be:

Track record: Until forty years old, spent a lot of time drinking hard and doing cocaine. Now wants to enforce draconian drug laws.

Type of climber: Wouldn’t show up on time due to hangover. Then bitch about others drinking or doing drugs.

Track record: Got into Yale on family pull, not merit. Didn’t do well academically.

Type of climber: Would get to go on Himalayan expeditions because of connections. Wouldn’t summit.

Track record: Miserable failure in Texas oil business. Bailed out by his daddy’s friends.

Type of climber: Would get stuck a lot on 5.8s. Would call on his cellphone for rescue.

Track record: Appointed President by Supreme Court following manipulation of voting count.

Type of climber: Would chip holds.

Track record: Started war claiming that Iraq had WMD and supported Al Qaeda’s 9/11 attacks.

Type of climber: Would chip AND glue holds.

Track record: Iraq a mess, civil war ready to break out; the U.S. more feared and disliked than ever, Americans less safe than ever.

Type of climber: After failing to climb a route, would dynamite the crag and build a landfill.

Maybe next year he'll take up climbing? Let's hope he sticks with golf. Even he can't fuck that up any worse than it already is.

It wasn't just his father's business connections who bailed him out. He engaged in insider trading in a big way and would have been doing prison time under the current enviroment, except his Dad's position at the time kept him from being investigated. Go back through past issues of Forbes or Barrons financial mags and you can find his disregard for the law and honesty. The vehement republicans on this site must have some childhood Daddy hangups. Though, most politicians seem like used car salesmen who couldn't make it. Oh well, oils well that ends well.

One more indication that Kerry is tougher than Bush:

The Associated Press

Updated: 6:22 p.m. ET May 22, 2004CRAWFORD, Texas - President Bush suffered cuts and bruises early Saturday afternoon when he fell while mountain biking on his ranch, White House spokesman Trent Duffy said.

Bush was on the 16th mile of a 17-mile ride when he fell, Duffy said. “He had minor abrasions and scratches on his chin, upper lip, nose, right hand and both knees,” Duffy said. Bush was wearing his bike helmet and a mouth guard when the mishap occurred. Duffy said he didn’t know exactly how the accident happened.

“It’s been raining a lot and the topsoil is loose,” the spokesman said. “You know this president. He likes to go all out. Suffice it to say he wasn’t whistling show tunes.”

Earlier this month, Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry took a spill from his bicycle while riding with Secret Service agents through Concord, N.H., about 18 miles north of Boston. Kerry fell when his bike hit a patch of sand. He was not injured.
