willstrickland Posted May 25, 2004 Posted May 25, 2004 Duane Allman smokes all dem foos. You could argue for some of Warren Haynes Govt Mule solos too. Quote
Skeezix Posted May 25, 2004 Author Posted May 25, 2004 Duane Allman smokes all dem foos. You could argue for some of Warren Haynes Govt Mule solos too. Yeah ...as soon as I posted "Redneck Friend" I started hearing Duane Allman - "Statesboro Blues" in my head... Quote
Peter_Puget Posted May 25, 2004 Posted May 25, 2004 Dunae must be paired with Betts for his best stuff. Quote

willstrickland Posted May 25, 2004 Posted May 25, 2004 Dunae must be paired with Betts for his best stuff. Perhaps, but listen to the Derek and the Dominoes album...the Clapton/Allman pairing was pretty nice eh? Quote
RobBob Posted May 26, 2004 Posted May 26, 2004 Not really a 'rock' song, but I always liked Allmans' "Pony Boy." Slide guitar on Dire Straits' "Brothers In Arms" Duane Allman, David Lindley, Ry Cooder are all slide masters. I kinda like the sound of the dobro better than a slide electric, though. Quote
Distel32 Posted May 26, 2004 Posted May 26, 2004 Govt Mule does have some rockin' shit! My vote is for the pedal steel slide guitar, played by Robert Randolph, song: Uncle Ted's Jam. it really doesn't get any better Quote
nonanon Posted May 26, 2004 Posted May 26, 2004 Ry Cooder on "She Runs Hot" from the Little Village CD. Or on second thought, it's his solo on "The Very Thing" from Bop 'til You Drop. Bonnie Raitt also grew into an amazingly deadly elec. slide player. She kind of inherited/adapted that Lowell George sizzle. Most of her solos blow away anything Allman ever did, imo. Too bad about the both of 'em. Drugs suck, btw. Quote
ScottP Posted May 26, 2004 Posted May 26, 2004 Lightnin Hopkins' "Mister Charlie" Robbie Robertson said that after he heard Lightnin play, he practiced and practiced until his fingers bled, trying to emulate the sound. It was only after all the pain that someone told him Lightnin Hopkins was the king of the slide guitar. Quote
Skeezix Posted May 27, 2004 Author Posted May 27, 2004 Check out "Lightnin' in New York" ...He also plays boogie-woogie piano on that record. But Hopkins doesn't count because he's not rock. He's pure blues roots. "Boy, if you can't say it, then sing it! ...Whoa-oh Mister Charlie, you mill is burnin' down." Ry Cooder: "Vigilante Man," "Thirteen Question Method" Quote
Dru Posted May 27, 2004 Posted May 27, 2004 Snakefinger plays some mean slide guitar on the Residents' "Live Mole Show" album Quote

He's pure blues roots. "Boy, if you can't say it, then sing it! ...Whoa-oh Mister Charlie, yo rollin' mill is burnin' down." Agreed, but you have to admit that as Lightnin Hopkins tunes go, "Mister Charlie" rocks more than most. Quote

Doug Posted May 28, 2004 Posted May 28, 2004 One of the best uses of slide I've heard is "In my time of dying" by Led Zepplin. Jimmy Page rocks. Quote

tread_tramp Posted April 21, 2005 Posted April 21, 2005 I saw Rory Block play some licks at the Triple Door last night. She finally dicovered that a #13 deep well socket was the only thing that would fit her finger for playing slide guitar. She did for Amazing Grace what Hendrix did for the Star Spangled Banner. Quote
