I know people access the PCT year round on both sides of the highway there. I just don't know how far they plow towards Big Lake. It's easier to access the ridge from starting on the PCT I think, the directions from Big Lake are confusing and there's a bunch of turns. Are you thinking about skinning in? blush.gif Not telling me on purpose? My feelings are hurt. I track down your climbing shoes at the gym and this is the treatment I get. cry.gifI'll remember that bro. evils3d.gif Today was awesome up there, crazy wind but the snow was really good. This weekend?

A buddy and I attempted Wash in a day about this time of year several years ago by hiking (post holes all the way) with no showshoes, getting to the pinnacle. Full day event. We took off from the snowpark strait East of Hayrick Butte and followed the road a little more than a mile, took a short left, then just xc'd near the PCT to the mountain. The guy I was with got so tired he forgot where he was and barely made it the last mile.

Skins or shoes would make short work of that trip.

i would like to get back there soon, probably not this weekend. I had to dig my truck out at bachy today, it be pukin and blowin up there. 60-70mph gusts at the top of pine marten

I'd really like to start up at santiam and tour south to bachelor, doing the ascents and making the turns along the way... that would be SICK.

Generally the jumpoff is how far they plow into Big Lake (which I haven't been up there recently). You start on the West Side of Big Lake and ski in. Ski in is straightforward (you should do it in the dark if you plan to fire car to car in a day). Take your skis as high on the ridge as you can; the ski off is sweet (a particular patroler at Willamette skied off the true summit of it in the late 90's... sickness!). Conditions aren't exactly prime, but you knew that. I think there is another thread going about info, etc. Let me know if you need rack suggestion, etc.

I most recently climbed it in early Jan. of this year, but I am willing to bet conditions are very different. Good luck!

they stop plowing at Ray Benson sno-park

whoa! a troller skied off the summit of washingtion...yea! 2 dudes on pins and a boarder taged the far right chute/cliff line on Hayricks west face a few weeks ago, pretty worthy.

Yes, I have seen it a few times: 98/99, 99/00, and this year. Gappy in places though. It's definately done for this year; we'll need another good year before you see that one again. What are you looking for and how far are you willing to drive? Perhaps I could recommend some alternatives/better choices than that one (even in OR). Let me know.

And to answer everyone's questions: No I don't have pics. Sorry! The patroler's name is Andrius; he was head patroller at Willamette for a number of years (late 90's); the true definition of dirtbag: six months climbing, six months skiing. Perhaps some others have meet him? I haven't skiied at Willamette much since relocating to Corvallis from Eugene so I don't know if he is still there (anyone?).

As far as which side to ski off of the ridge: West.

Hope I answered everything!
