ryland_moore Posted January 15, 2004 Posted January 15, 2004 Anyone been? What is the access like during winter and spring? Specific Areas to hit up? Recommendations? Any info. would be helpful. Thanks! Quote
b-rock Posted January 15, 2004 Posted January 15, 2004 I remember an article in Couloir a couple years back about the Steens, they skied the east side. Might still have it around if you want it. Looked pretty sweet, I'd love to get down there sometime. Quote
Thrashador Posted January 15, 2004 Posted January 15, 2004 Been wanting to go for a bunch of years. Think the thing to do is to access from the east[Alvord Desert] before the snow melts too much. There are some private property issues there from what I've heard. Stunning country with a small snow/ski window in most seasons. Looks like decent steeps! Quote
Fejas Posted January 15, 2004 Posted January 15, 2004 There is usually little snow for sking. but there should be enough this year. Thats a beautiful area, but your only going to be albe to ski about half of the vert on the moutain line... Quote
E-rock Posted January 15, 2004 Posted January 15, 2004 There's some great hotsprings on the East side of the Steens Mountain as well. So you get to soak after you ski. Â BTW, the "c" in "bc" stands for "country" Quote
iain Posted January 15, 2004 Posted January 15, 2004 he's just emphasizing that it really is "good country" Quote
ryland_moore Posted January 15, 2004 Author Posted January 15, 2004 I have a st-st-studdering pr- pro- problem as well. Sorry. Quote
gapertimmy Posted January 15, 2004 Posted January 15, 2004 i wonder if you could access via the frenchglenn side as well, maybe sled assisted... the northern access road from the west side seemed fairly mellow to me. Â I'm with fejas, with the snows this year, i imagine some of the gullys will hold snow into June, but don't know if the vert drop would be super long. Still, all orygonianz should check this place out. Quote
steepconcrete Posted January 15, 2004 Posted January 15, 2004 You can get to a lot of it by sled almost to the top. Check out Keiger Gorge a huge glacier valley on the north? side...there was a cool OPB Oregon Field Guide on it a little back. Quote
kurthicks Posted January 16, 2004 Posted January 16, 2004 timmy, are you humping you dawg in that photo? Quote
ski_photomatt Posted January 19, 2004 Posted January 19, 2004 There is a chapter on Steens in The Best Ski Touring in America by Steve Barnett. It's a somewhat old book (1987) but still wonderfully relevant and entertaining. I dunno if it's out of print now or what. I remember the trip described was a traverse that exited out Keiger Gorge. I can re-read it and give more details if you are interested.. Quote
