iain Posted August 21, 2003 Author Posted August 21, 2003 PORTLAND - Some environmentalists are casting a suspicious eye on two fast-growing blazes in Central Oregon. President Bush had planned to visit the Deschutes National Forest to talk about forest policy. Now, the Oregon Wildlife Federation, the Booth and Bear Butte fires may be underscoring his argument for increased logging and thinning. Federation spokesman Joe Keating says it's strange that the fires started two weeks after lightning hit the area. It's unlikely for a fire to smolder that long. The Forest Service is investigating the cause of the fires. Keating has asked the FBI for an independent investigation of the fires. Carl Pope says his group, the Sierra Club, isn't ready to suggest a Bush connection to the fires. Jumping to conclusions won't help anyone, he says. (Copyright 2003 by The Associated Press. gapertimmy Posted August 21, 2003 Posted August 21, 2003 fires are so suck, at least this one appears to be re-bruning, if that is possible, some of the link fire area Quote

iain Posted August 21, 2003 Author Posted August 21, 2003 heh I stole that off the katu.com website. the pic was titled "gwcometh.jpg" Quote
Roger Posted August 21, 2003 Posted August 21, 2003 he's not even coming downtown this time, after last year's debacle. which is too bad, because that was sure fun to watch... instead he's just having a $1000 per plate lunch up at UP. As if the quarter of a billion $ he's already got isn't enough. Quote
iain Posted August 21, 2003 Author Posted August 21, 2003 they had to close down a multi-block radius around his hotel last time to keep back the angry throngs last time. a lot of hatred for that guy these days. funny when leaders of countries have to hide so far from the citizens they supposedly serve. Texans need to keep their paws off forests. Quote

Ratboy Posted August 21, 2003 Posted August 21, 2003 So if Bush is coming to the area, does anyone know where the Free Speech Zone has been set up? I'd hate to exercise my First Amendment Right outside of the official government designated area. Quote

Roger Posted August 21, 2003 Posted August 21, 2003 what's up w/ that first photo? iain, is your alter ego up at UP today protesting Bush and "assaulting" the KATU reporters? www.katu.com Quote
E-rock Posted August 21, 2003 Posted August 21, 2003 Have fun trying to change the world. You loser, homo, liberal, snot-noses. Get some new techniques. Protesting is soooo 1960's. Quote

iain Posted August 21, 2003 Author Posted August 21, 2003 dubyah's on his way to your neck of the woods timm@y, get your drawers ready to drop. Quote
gapertimmy Posted August 21, 2003 Posted August 21, 2003 ironic, dubyah was supposed to go to camp sherman for a "tour", now camp sherman is being evacuated because of the fire. maybe he'll decide to still do the tour. Quote
iain Posted August 21, 2003 Author Posted August 21, 2003 he'll probably make a point of tripping over some dead logs on the ground and proceed to chainsaw them ...or he may just trip over them... Quote
Ratboy Posted August 21, 2003 Posted August 21, 2003 I'm sure the nearby fires will work as excellent demonstration of why he needs to let timber companies gut more national forest. Quote
offwidthclimber Posted August 21, 2003 Posted August 21, 2003 of course! because the big, healthy trees that timber companies want are the problem, not the brush and undergrowth built up by years of fire suppression? bush = for forests Quote

Fine time, but not too much action. Nothing like a couple thousand people booing the "President" whilst angrily flipping him the bird. Satisfying. Funny how they need hundreds of armed cops in riot gear to keep a bunch of unarmed people from coming within 50 feet of the Prez. Ludicrous and comical at once. Bunch of burly dudes with zillion-power binoculars up on the roof of the Chiles Center (snipers?), a menacing-looking helicopter circling overhead, and throngs of secret service guys. What a fuckin' joke. Bush! Quote

rbw1966 Posted August 21, 2003 Posted August 21, 2003 I walked by a couple SUV's in downtown portland this a.m. that the SS was loading with enough firepower to take down Al Qaeda. Then again, this is little Beirut, no? Quote
E-rock Posted August 21, 2003 Posted August 21, 2003 Sweet! I hope all you dumb Portland Hippies wind up in a one-way paddie-wagon to Arizona. I'm sick of looking at your bare feet when I visit my superior anarchist friends in P-town. Quote
Ursa_Eagle Posted August 21, 2003 Posted August 21, 2003 and who had to pay for all the extra policework to protect the president while he was here for a fundraiser? I find it hard to believe that the City of Portland will be getting a check from the GW campaign... Quote
