Winter Posted June 17, 2003 Posted June 17, 2003 Anyone used these before? Climbaxe has 'em for about $100 less than the Stubain aluminums usually cost. The toe piece doesn't look as good but I bet they work fine. Any experience with 'em? Quote

I'll probably beat the hell out of whatever I get, so might as well go cheap as long as they'll stay on my foot. The Grivel's are step-in and I'm looking for something strap-on. Quote

There's nothing special about them, but I can't see paying twice as much for what will be a niche item for me. Quote

Yeah, but they sharpen real fast. Just don't try to use your fine file that you use for your tools. It'll gall up so fast that even a drill mounted wire brush won't clean the teeth. Buy a small bastard cut file or better yet a second cut file designed for soft alloys with self clearing teeth. Quote

Rodchester Posted June 19, 2003 Posted June 19, 2003 Actually I think they are hinged. I think that the front of the bar hinges at th point that it connects to the front section of the crampon. Off_White Posted June 19, 2003 Posted June 19, 2003 I've got a pair, they are effectively hinged by that bar, which the heel piece slides along to make them more compact for packing. My son has been the one to use them, since my old Salewa's won't quite adjust out to fit his monster feet, but they seem just fine. I think the Stubai's are a bit lighter, but I don't know that they're $50 lighter. Quote
catbirdseat Posted December 20, 2004 Posted December 20, 2004 I just tried out a pair of Cassin C10L aluminum step in crampons that I bought for $69 at the Pacific Coast Feather Company sale last month. They are great. Very quick to put on and they stay on with no balling up. I've never had aluminum crampons before. It is so nice not having all that weight on your feet! Cassin C10L Crampons Quote
