JoshK Posted March 20, 2003 Posted March 20, 2003 Yo all. I've found that after reading the weather for local places over and over I can generally distinguish, to some degree, what local weather will be based on the overall forecast. For example, when looking at the east cascades forecast "mostly cloudy, chance of showers" generally means decent weather in leavenworth. I'm curious how this goes for smith. I've been looking at the central oregon and john day highlands (is it anywhere near there??) reports. I guess bend and redmond are the nearest cities? Anyway, from this they all seem to be predicting somewhat chilly (highs of 40s to low 50s) and chance of rain/snow for most of the weekend and next week. Can I take this to mean that most likely smith weather is going to suck, or should I know more than this and assume it will be good anyway? spray away. Quote
JoshK Posted March 20, 2003 Author Posted March 20, 2003 Shit, stop spraying and somebody fuggin' answer this. It seems like everybody has gone to smiff, so somebody knows this. Quote
erik Posted March 20, 2003 Posted March 20, 2003 its the desert there is always dry routes the rain and snow sucks r u up in the air on going? check www.smithrock.com see you down there Quote
JoshK Posted March 20, 2003 Author Posted March 20, 2003 Yes, up in the air. skisports and I have from this coming saturday to the sunday following to climb and the weather everywhere is going to suck. banff was the original plan but I'm a pussy and don't feel like drive all the way there, so smiff is an option. so is staying around here and hitting some alpine. JoshK Posted March 20, 2003 Author Posted March 20, 2003 And so, Eric, if I read you correcty, you are saying that even if it's raining in redmond (which is where the closest forecast seems to be) it's often fine in smith? Quote
erik Posted March 20, 2003 Posted March 20, 2003 spell my name right monkey boy.... naw the weather will prolly suck, but there is always shit to climb. Quote
Dru Posted March 20, 2003 Posted March 20, 2003 bottom half of scarface stays dry all year round. Quote
cracked Posted March 20, 2003 Posted March 20, 2003 The weather at Smith is always good. I have never been rained out. And remember "rain" in the forecast means a sprinkle of about 1 minute. Just go, and have fun. The weather forecast is usually wrong. Quote
ryland_moore Posted March 20, 2003 Posted March 20, 2003 JoshK, check out weather for Redmond and Terrebonne here . If you still want more specific info. I would call Redpoint climbers supply in Terrebonne during normal business hours. It usually doesn't rain out in the desert, but if a large enough systrem comes through, then the "rain shadow effect" ceases to apply. Best of luck! You can always try and find the caves -at least those that are still open -near Bend. Redpoint may be able to give you directions, or folks who live in the area on this site may know more. Best of luck! Quote
Dru Posted March 20, 2003 Posted March 20, 2003 if going to the caves look out for bats and the county sherriff and jacked up[ pickups full of guns. Quote
sketchfest Posted March 20, 2003 Posted March 20, 2003 Smith is a vortex, it never rains there. Quote
RuMR Posted March 20, 2003 Posted March 20, 2003 No lie... If you have a chance to go, just go...never been rained out...and the ice fogs are only in december... Quote
TimL Posted March 20, 2003 Posted March 20, 2003 It'll rain for about 5 minues and then stop. Just abut enough time to run for cover and lower off a climb then the sun comes back out. Just go. You'll be able to climb. Quote
b-rock Posted March 20, 2003 Posted March 20, 2003 Nah, it's going to rain. All you spring breakers better wait until Monday. Quote
iain Posted March 20, 2003 Posted March 20, 2003 actually threats of rain in the forecast are perfect because many people bail. Quote
glacier Posted March 20, 2003 Posted March 20, 2003 Generally, the weather is better (drier) than the Redmond Airport observations/predictions. Check the cragcam for cloud cover over the rocks, but generally, if its 50's and no wind predicted, you're golden. Quote
iain Posted March 20, 2003 Posted March 20, 2003 isn't the cragcam down? and why is it down btw? That shot of monkeyface (and sometimes TFJ) was cool Quote
erik Posted March 20, 2003 Posted March 20, 2003 i believe low 50's upper 40's is like optimal rock to rubber friction. Quote

Best of luck! the lava tubes are officially closed until mid april me thinks, for the hibernating Big Eared Townsend Bat. You might get hassled by the man (forest service) if you are caught in the caves. The only safe way is to park furhter off and hike in a few miles so your car isnt' outside the mouth of the cave. i'm pretty sure horse cave, just NE of Bend isn't affected by these closures but that place is a real dump, but lots of light comes in and makes for good cragging. all the other tubes are located of China Hat Road, go south on HWY 97 thru bend, just south of town, turn left (east) onto China Hat Road, tubes are on your left all over the place, some signage but not much. iain Posted March 20, 2003 Posted March 20, 2003 or alternatively, just let the bats get their their beauty sleep! Quote
Dru Posted March 20, 2003 Posted March 20, 2003 babies got rabies if you are deperate for tunnel there is a cool one on marsupial aqueduct Quote
Skisports Posted March 20, 2003 Posted March 20, 2003 Is the weather warmer then what the forcast normally predicts ??? Quote
