jon
If your heading out this weekend don't rely on your GPS. The military will be degrading the signal for the civilian signal, which could be inaccurate up to 300 meters.

iain
I was under the impression they could choose geographical areas to activate SA these days.

jon
It was on slashdot but I only briefly looked at it so you might be right. So if you climbing in Iraq for phuqs sakes be careful!
Figger_Eight
Are you kidding? I just bought one and now it's worthless? I can be lost, drunk and blind and manage to stumble my way to within 300m of where I want to be.

iain
the deactivation of SA was one of Clinton's greatest legacies to SAR applications, IMHO.

iain
Yeah here's the deal from New Scientist. They will not activate SA globally, but may do so over the Persian Gulf area. Â blahblahblah satellites saddam blah selective availability
salbrecher
"Most" of the time I don't need to be closer than 300m anyways. Unless I'm on a logging road and looking for a turnoff or marking my tent. 300 meters will get me to a col or basin just fine. My GPS has a barometric altimeter that I use just as much as grid reference, screwing with the signal won't affect that!
catbirdseat
Even if they did reactivate SA, your GPS would still be more accurate than +/- 300 m. I think more like 100 m. 300 sounds off. I was using GPS before Clinton deactivated SA, and I got pretty good accuracy as I recall.
iain
bah you couldn't get any work done w/it. you were all over the place. carrying around an FM antenna kit was a total pain to get the correction data.
klenke
Well, someone should test this hypothesis this weekend by using his/her GPS at a known lat./long. location (in the city using a topo or something). Will need to do more than one measurement to verify. Six readings in six different locations ought to be sufficient. Maybe at pubs during a pub crawl. iain
all you need to do is sit still. if the gps says you're moving and you're not, case closed.
