vsigler Posted December 3, 2020 Posted December 3, 2020 I came across this picture in a Gaia GPS newsletter, and was wondering what mountain it shows. Can anyone identify it? Quote
JasonG Posted December 3, 2020 Posted December 3, 2020 Can we get a hint? I mean do you know if it is in the Cascades even? Quote
vsigler Posted December 3, 2020 Author Posted December 3, 2020 I wish I could, but I truly don’t know what mountain it is. I saw the picture and immediately thought that it looked quite interesting to climb, so I was hoping somebody in the forum might have either recognized it from being on it in-person, or from a photograph. It looks like it could be a Cascade mountain, but I have no idea. Quote
Bronco Posted December 3, 2020 Posted December 3, 2020 My gut reaction is that photo was taken in the Rockies. Quote
JasonG Posted December 3, 2020 Posted December 3, 2020 I was thinking more Selkirks or one of BC interior ranges west of the Rockies, FWIW. That avy path/valley bottom in the lower right doesn't quite look like the cascades? Quote
genepires Posted December 4, 2020 Posted December 4, 2020 interesting combination of human in photo. we got a group of three backcountry skiers (so not a heli ski outfit) and what looks like a guided group of three (based on the lead person rope coil choice) If in cascades and possibly early spring due to depth of bootpack, I can't think of any usual guided locations with that back drop. if it was accessible by non skiis, there should be lots more ski tracks. JasonG Posted December 4, 2020 Posted December 4, 2020 Yeah @genepires, I was thinking the same thing. A guided area in the BC interior with heli access, most likely? Quote
bigeo Posted December 5, 2020 Posted December 5, 2020 But why are they booting down when the ski conditions look amazing? Quote
lunger Posted December 5, 2020 Posted December 5, 2020 first glance made me think of video peak at rogers pass, but likely not correct Quote

Rad Posted December 10, 2020 Posted December 10, 2020 My guess is a staged photo op on a guided heli-ski outing in the Selkirks. Three ski tracks in the background (guide + 2 clients), no up track. I agree w Gene's assessment of the two clients being short-roped in the foreground. Looks like they walked 100 feet to that pinnacle and came back again - tracks don't seem to go futher. Note the ski pole rather than iceax in the hand of the second person. Seems a little odd for a random ridge highpoint that's clearly lower than where the photo was taken. Soooo, my prediction is that the helicopter is on the summit where the photo was taken and these rich clients are about to ride down some tasty pow. It's a rough life. Quote
bellows Posted December 16, 2020 Posted December 16, 2020 I might be ruining the fun of speculating, but it's from Cowboy Ridge on Justice Mountain outside of Selkirk Lodge. Photo credit Andrew Councell during 2018 Ski Guide exam. 1 1 Quote
JasonG Posted December 17, 2020 Posted December 17, 2020 Excellent @bellows, thanks! Glad to see us old folks can still play the game. Quote
