Lambone Posted January 30, 2003 Posted January 30, 2003 So what is the closest area upthere? Gibralter Wall? Quote
Cpt.Caveman Posted January 30, 2003 Posted January 30, 2003 If you are going through Idaho (i da pimp) then Gib wall is probably the closest. It's up to 4 pitches and several different lines to be contrived. Quote
Dru Posted January 30, 2003 Posted January 30, 2003 "less wardens the better" and a free hotspring at the base. Quote
Cpt.Caveman Posted January 30, 2003 Posted January 30, 2003 If you are talking about Gib wall- I dont remember the town name but it's in the book and on a map. I know the town before Gib wall has no room and board. You'd have to camp below the wall which is common or drive out an hour to get a room. Quote

Town closest to Gib is Canal Flats, just south of Radium, North of Cranbrook. Quote
Cpt.Caveman Posted January 30, 2003 Posted January 30, 2003 That is correct. Cranbook has closest rooms. Canal flats has hot breakfast early in the morning and a real shitty bar. Quote
jja Posted January 30, 2003 Posted January 30, 2003 That is correct. Cranbook has closest rooms. Canal flats has hot breakfast early in the morning and a real shitty bar. Â Once you get to Canal Flats what's the approach to Gib Wall? Quote
Cpt.Caveman Posted January 30, 2003 Posted January 30, 2003 Drive the dirt road out of town (likely snow covered). I think it's east for a while. Maybe 30-40 minutes then it's on the left. It's all in the book. Quote
snoboy Posted January 30, 2003 Posted January 30, 2003 Get the book. Or bribe me heavily and I will copy it out for you... Quote
Cpt.Caveman Posted January 30, 2003 Posted January 30, 2003 It's a pretty reliable spot for ice and a little more secluded from any larger town. Expect people from Idaho (i da pimp) and eastern WA mostly to be there. Â Some of the belay ledges have bolts. Quote
Dru Posted January 30, 2003 Posted January 30, 2003 ya its 3 hrs from canmore which is too far for the 1piece suit crowd to go. cranbrook area locals are the dominant canuck species. Â less wardens the better is a 1 pitch wi4 in the next valley south of gib wal. like i said it has free hotsprings nearby for apres climb. the only freee hotsprings in the columbia trench. woohoo! snoboy Posted January 30, 2003 Posted January 30, 2003 OK, my book lists: Ram Creek 36.6 degrees Buhl Creek 40.0 degrees  The entry for Fairmont (the resort) also says "In addition to the commercial pools, some of the early bath houses are still usable,..." Quote
JoshK Posted January 30, 2003 Posted January 30, 2003 OK, maybe i'm confused, but how the hell do people get away *charging* to go in a natural hot spring? Quote
snoboy Posted January 30, 2003 Posted January 30, 2003 Just like anyone else charging for use of natural resoursces, they get a lease, or in some cases maybe bought the land long ago, build pools, and ticket booths... Â I don't like the ones you pay. You might as well go to the local Aquatic Centre! Quote
Lambone Posted January 31, 2003 Posted January 31, 2003 What book? Â The holy grail of Ice climbing... Â Look at it and ye shall be revealed the powers of the almighty! Quote
Paul_detrick Posted January 31, 2003 Posted January 31, 2003 Has anyone been up to Gib wall recenily. Is it too warm there? Quote
JoshK Posted January 31, 2003 Posted January 31, 2003 Yes, thank god beautiful kennedy hot springs is still free!! Quote
Alex Posted January 31, 2003 Posted January 31, 2003 What book?  Ack! Blasphemer! How can any self-respecting ice climber not know what book?!?!  I climbed Gib Wall with Gene Pires a few years back, it was really fun! Not as hard as Weeping Wall, but a really nice 4. We went back to Golden that night, stayed at the hostel, climbed Guiness Gully next morning.  I think the Capt Caveman climbed Gib Wall with Beckey a few seasons ago, if I recall?  Cheers, Alex   Quote
