I too wish my employer believed in America. I don't believe the best way to grow and support American industry is by subsidizing industries that can be done better, cheaper and quicker elsewhere.(bagging chalk being the epitome of this) That's the path Europe's taken and it (with few exceptions) isn't leading them to success. By keeping jobs such as bagging chalk local Metolius inefficently deploys their capital - which could be used developing new products, as an example, making them less competitive. Innovation - both in design, and manufacturing is the way the 1st world will suceed.

jjd- I have no problem with harvesting timber. I have a problem with the government constructing and maintaining a road, gratis, for the extraction of timber sold at sub-market rates. Then keeping that road closed to the general public for "safety". Too often recreation is the redhaired stepchild to extractive uses of the National Forests - and recreation is increasingly asked to pay more of their share ($15 a night for a campground spot!) when the logging subsidies show no sign of slowing.

It's a subsidy left and right can agree needs to be ended. Now how about agriculture subsidies.....

naw - partly because our IT department doesn't like it, partly because I've ended up with responsibility over 7-8 different instruments, each with an attached computer, each with "less than optimal" programming/hardware installations. I wish I had the time to spend to fiddle with them, but I don't - and management doesn't necessarily see the $ benefit to fixing them when they "work" fine in there non-networked, slow ass glory.
