  1. It wasn't totally undoable, I would have had to do quite a bit of nasty traversing though. Ran out of motivation. At least I kept going long enough to hit a ridgecrest and get a bit of a look around. That peak's skunked me a couple times, it's not a major peak at all but I'm probably gonna have to go back again some time and summit it. Not right away though, it's not going anywhere.

    Shasta and Cougars

What about tagging and relocating problem humans, then shooting them if the problems persist? Kinda like they do w/ bears.

    X2

I shot up all my G.I. Joe action figures w/ the bb gun years ago. No more toys to play w/ now.
  4. Damn, now I vaguely remember seeing that and thinking I should check it out. Well maybe slightly reclusive but not really antisocial. Mostly I'm just a lame-ass and don't do a whole lot after work during the week.

    Ha!

Hey guys, this is the time of year when we want the snow to start melting, not accumulate more!
  6. What barbeque? I haven't ventured out to a pub club yet, it would be interesting to meet some of the faces behind the avatars.
  7. I read "The Mountains of My Life" recently, a compilation from several different books he's written. You don't hear so much about him. Dude was seriously bad ass. Got a bum rap from his kinfolk, especially the climbing community, that dogged him the rest of his career and beyond. Not the best climbing book ever written, but definitely worth reading. Contemporary of Terray, Rebuffat, Buhl, quite a collection of bad asses operating in the Alps and larger ranges of the world back in the day.
  8. Kicked steps up a gully above SF Stilly drainage, snow was firm in avalanche tracks, otherwise it was pretty much suck. Plowing thru mid thigh or deeper, totally sinking in, spending 30 seconds to tamp down a decent foot placement each time. Didn't bring snowshoes, didn't think I would need them. Despite less than ideal conditions and wandering around in fog and getting snowed on HARD and not summitting anything, it was GREAT getting out. Nice glisade coming back down for several hundred feet. Frozen ass by the time I was done, well worth it though.

Yeah, the opening scene w/ Nightcrawler kickin' everyone's ass was the best, followed by the scene w/ Wolverine kickin' everyone's ass at the school. Overall a little disappointed. But the preview for Matrix Reloaded looks way too cool, less than 2 weeks before that comes out!
  10. I'm amazed he didn't pass out from the pain or go into shock and become non-functional. Pretty amazing he kept his shit together long enough to get himself out of it. I read somewhere he ran out of water fairly quick (day 2 maybe?), so he was probably pretty dehydrated on top of everything else. Kind of like the proverbial animal caught in a trap chewing it's own leg off to escape. The will to live is pretty overpowering in some individuals.
  11. The remains of the Broken Top crater (inside, not the rim) is one of my absolute favorite places, I've been in there a couple times. Does have kind of an other worldly feel to it.
  12. Colchuck Col to lake, definitely one of the sweetest continous glisades around here.
  13. "moose? it's not like we're talking about bears" I heard this about 5 min before coming face to face w/a moose on my last trip to WY. This was about a 1/2 a second before the moose charged towards us and the horse i was on went careening down the trail towards camp. I didn't mind getting smacked w/tree branches at full gallop so much as i minded the large cliff off to the left. Never been so scared. Most of what I hear, be more scared of the moose than the bear.

I turned the big 3-0 last fall. It wasn't terribly traumatic. I'm older than I used to be, but I'm still not old. Like my older bro says, you're only as old as you feel....or was that as old as you act? Happy b-day.

    damnd snaffles

Man, the pigeons at Frenchman Coulee, when they really get going w/ the cooing around mid-morning, that's a deafening roar. Need some raptors over there eating those suckers.

    damnd snaffles

Okay, let's clear this thing up. What is a snaffle? Definitions please. Is it any critter that gets into your food or otherwise bothers you? I generally assumed all snaffles came from the rodent family. If it's a broader definition, then ya gotta include birds like crows, camp robbers, gulls, maybe some larger mammals like deer and goats, and definitely bears, maybe the world's largest snaffle?
  17. Whuh? Hooked on ebonics?

Assimilate, dood! Be alternative, just like eveybody else. How alternative is it if everybody's doing it? How 'bout not being alternative to be different?

So what should I be wearing, pink lycra tights?

    damnd snaffles

Okay mountain fashion police, you might have to come take me away. I usually wear swim trunk style nylon shorts and a polypro top. If it's real cold or I think I'm going to be plowing thru lots of snow, I wear polypro bottoms. It works, what's wrong w/ that? I just make sure I don't have the Superman outfit going on. I just don't like wearing pants when I'm hiking/climbing. I don't have a Seattle sombrero, but I got the next best thing, the Sitka. Only difference is snaps vs. velcro on the sides. Now let me tell you why I like that thing. The brim is wide enough to keep the rain off of most of your body w/out having to wear a jacket. I usually overheat when I'm moving and I have the parka on, unless it's real cold. And w/ the sombrero, you don't cover your ears or block your peripheral vision like you do when you're wearing a hood, makes me feel like I'm insulated from the world around me, which is NOT what I want when I'm outside. So do your worst to me fashion nazis!

    damnd snaffles

Clearly you haven't had a run-in with a Ring-Tail cat. I haven't. Do they have those in the mountains? I thought they were mostly down by the Mexican border. I don't think I would count those as snaffles either, related to raccoons aren't they?

Martins aren't snaffles. They eat snaffles!

So...it's like a time machine, I'm sure that's what she looked like 30 or 40 years ago.
  24. I grew up in White Salmon, across the river from where you'll be. Nice area.
