Going road tripping in a little over a week. Planning on moving around a lot and hitting a bunch of different areas. Going solo, mostly I'll just be hiking/backpacking. Planning on going in to Lonesome Lake, any suggestions on scrambles nearby? Anything from 3rd class to a little bit of low 5th. I've been too lazy to check out a climbing guide on the area, I can always eyeball it when I get there, just curious what experiences some of you have had out there.

Shouldn't that be, "I'll see your , and raise you a ?" Ever been in the Seven Devils on the ID side of Hell's Canyon? A bit further over yet, some good stuff there.

Ratboy and GregW, I wouldn't disagree w/ either of your statements.

I'll probably be there briefly in mid-August too.

Go to the Wallowas next time then....

I have to agree. It cracks me up how people rail against religious groups for being narrow minded, condemning, etc., etc., displaying equal narrow mindedness and condemnation, pretty much becoming what they profess to hate.

Cuz it's 1:40 in the frickin' morning and I'm losing a battle w/ insomnia. Visiting my folks in White Salmon, WA and it's too frickin' hot down here. North face of Hood looked gorgeous today, surprised how much snow is left on it and also SE aspect of Adams. Bet both of them will be pretty bald by the end of this summer. Now I need some

Where's the pic? Been up Eagle Creek many times back in the day, cool place. Never seen any half nekkid pot smoking hippie chicks or whatever it is the picture was.

Never been to a Mormon dance or church service. I did play hoops w/ them fairly regularly in high school. I'm not defending their religion, but I knew a handful of Mormons growing up and they all seemed like decent folk.

Maybe it was moondancing!

I second heading over to play on the Echo Peaks after doing Cathedral. More of those "engorged nubbins" over there.

Bluegrass ! Well, w/out the drums and electrified instrumentation. But it still rocks. Bill Monroe, the Godfather of the genre, penned a tune "Whitehorse Rag" after a visit to the Darrington festival and the inspiring view of the peak of the same name from the stage.

Yeah, but the Mormons have basketball courts IN THEIR CHURCHES and they actively encourage dancing to their youth. Growing up Baptist I thought dancing was naughtier than sex. They may be a cult and they may have some seriously wacked doctrine, but they do a pretty good job of making it seem interesting to youngsters, some other denominations should be taking notes.

Washington and Oregon Wilderness Mountaineering...

I got a ticket when I had a valid pass hanging from my mirror before. I photocopied my pass, sent a note saying "you made a mistake, I'm not paying and I'm considering this matter closed." Never heard anything after that, this was last summer. Yeah, pretty stupid if I bought the pass which I hate doing, then they ticket me anyway cuz they're not paying attention. -
No, he has just been focused on work and didn't have the time off. He missed out on some good trips. There is always next year and anyhow he is making more money than me now. Well you can tell the ladies he may make more money, but you're the good looking one.

i'm sorry but you must have summited a glaciated peak to become a member of our club Thielsen, 3 Fingered Jack, and Broken Top are "Glaciated" peaks? Hmm.... That must mean peaks that were glaciated at one time. But then that would include just about everything...

I'm waiting to see how this thing plays out before I judge Kobe as guilty. Seems way outta character for him. Yeah, the Lakers will be loaded next year. Don't know about them winning 70+ games, it will take a while for them to figure out how to play together. I like Payton, Malone probably deserves a ring too after the career he's had. I get a little tired of Kobe but he's got incredible skills. I'm just sick and tired of Shaq, I wanna puke when I hear him attempting to talk. But coach Phil is my least favorite of the bunch, the supposed zen buddha master coaching genius is the biggest whiner in the NBA and somehow everytime things don't go his way, he calls a press conference, whines quite a bit, and next thing you know the refs are in his pocket, the Lakers shoot 3 times as many free throws as their opponents, and the game is over before half time. It's not enough to have the best players in the game on your team, you gotta have the fix on from the league, too? I will swear to the day I die, Game 6 of the Western Conference Finals in '02 between Sacramento and LA was a hoax, the refs flat out were not going to let LA lose. No question. OK, end of anti-Laker rant.

Love that place. Nice pic.

It's weird though, sometimes I notice just the opposite. When I'm leading I climb bolder, when I'm seconding I get a little timid sometimes. Or think "Glad I didn't have to lead that." But when it's my lead I just do it, falling isn't an option. It is definitely normal to feel uncomfortable when you start leading, nothing to worry about.

Ben and Jason, you guys have been busy. Looks like Josh hasn't been on the latest outings. Did he have enough after Colchuck?

Oh my God! I live in Shoreline. I think you have to differentiate between urban rednecks and rural rednecks. Really it's just a state of mind, but to find redneck in it's truest form, ya gotta be out in the sticks. Nothing against small towns, I grew up in one, lots of good people.

Agree, cool bouldering on the volcanic stuff. After playing around there, 3FJ, Broken Top I think volcanic stuff gets a seriously bum rap. Some of it is choss, but some is totally solid and you can't find anything any frictionyer (is that a word? ). Can't see the need to place pro on that last 80 feet or so, pretty mild scrambling. Definitely a fun outing.

Nice job Lee. A little less brushy than S. Ridge of Kyes?

I use poles on fairly steep snow if it's not hard packed and if the runout is safe. A couple weeks ago I went from Glacier Basin to the North Col on Monte Cristo w/out getting my axe out. Once on the Col I used the axe, also descended w/ it. The snow was fairly slushy, any little slide was quickly stopped by my feet. I never felt unsafe while ascending. I agree w/ MattP, travel on snow just takes lots of practice.
