I've been kicking myself for selling my meteorology textbook. Dru is right. Tropical air is warm and moist due to the high angle of incidence of the sun. There are no deserts in the tropical latitudes. Temperate air is cooler and the atmosphere is less thick. There are 2 statistical high presure areas over the atlantic and pacific in the northern hemispere. Land masses to the east of the high presure areas are desert. Both poles, due to low temps have sinking air and thus high presure. Both the artic and antartic are very dry.
