I think you're mixing up ownership of oil fields with control. I'm sure our government doesn't want to own the oil fields because then we would own the country and have to run a government etc. We do want unhindered acess to oil. Sadam is a threat to unhindered acess. Let's say the main export of the middle east was lima beans. Do you really think we would have thousands of troops over there. Well, better than coming from some biased news source. I run a small construction firm, but it would take an amazingly lucrative contract to get me to touch any project over there. I've been against this war all along. I'm not as anti as the protestors, but anti none the less. Since we are now fighting I don't think bitching about the war is usefull. Well maybe if we really fuck up during the war. Just sit back and watch what happens right now. Maybe they will do something really cool like drop that E bomb.

The fact they get more snow does make it safer. There's less time inbetween storms for wind crust or sun crust to build up. Also a deeper snowpack helps make the thermal gradient less severe.
