Relaxing and trusting your feet is the only right thing you said there. slamming your spurs in too hard makes them harder to pull out, and the only time I ever look at my feet is when I'm spurring up a hardened dead tree.

When I was a kid everyone worshipped Boeing, even when there were big layoffs. Nowadays I think there are a lot of people who wish Boeing would just hurry up and leave. Microsoft seems to have taken over Boeing's spot, but I don't think you can really put much faith in folks who spend less time innovating new things and more time being business bully boys. In a lot of ways things were much cooler around here when I was a kid, but you can't turn back the clock. Also from a geographic perspective it's only natural that there's a big population build up in coastal areas with good harbors and a nice environment.

Just so you know, spurring or gaffing up a tree you aren't going to kill is considered aid among tree climbers, and a generally nasty habit. However, throwing a rope over a limb up high in the tree and pulling yourself into the tree with the help of the rope is considered free climbing I won't hold you to professional standards CBS. this thread would be so super in THE NEW TREE CLIMBING FORUM

I took the Mounties basic course and dropped out of the intermediate course. I think the basic course provides a good general background for mountaineering. The intermediate course is only good if you want to stay in the Mounties system. If you want to be a hard core Mounty climber then take the class. If you want to be a competent unaffiliated climber then: climb a bunch, take short seminars, consider hiring a guide for a day or two. The only real bitch I have about the Mounties system is the use of intermediate students(last years basic students) as instructors.

I would take a single set of cams small-#4 camalot, stoppers, and a set of tri cams (I like em but chuck had some hexes) plus at the very least another #4; we found several placements for a #5.

If you had climbed the route (Flavelle/Howe) you would know that there is about 1000' of mid 5th and 1.5 pitches of 5.10.
