I don't think its unreasonable to think someone might forget a rope. I also don't think it unreasonable to pick up said rope after a reasonable amount of time and try to return it to the party who forgot it. I actually think its a very nice thing to do and given the same set of circumstances as those described I would have (and have) done the same thing. I doubt any respectable guide service would intentionally leave gear behind at a crag to use the next day. I do think its unreasonable to assume someone forgot a tent that was set up. Period. The M14 carbine is (or at least was at the time I was in) used as a sniper rifle in the Army. For home protection I agree that the M14 is way too big and bulky. Pump action 12 gauge shotgun with a pistol grip is where its at.

I have a friend who is making bivvy sacks out of Epic. He made me one that is modeled after the Bibler bipod bivy--sort of a one-man tent that weighs in at a scant 1 lb 7 ozs including the pole and stakes. Crams up about the size of a large pair of socks. (If anyone wants to order a custom-made bivvy out of epic let me know). I set it up and hosed it down in my back yard for about 5 minutes or so. Water beaded and rolled off the fabric no problem. The interior was dry as a bone. Oh, and I had not seam sealed it. Epic is the shit for lightweight personal shelters that I have tested. I imagine using it fora tent would be just fine with one caveat: the fabric is very thin and therefore pretty fragile.
