Thats a sweet looking climg. What did it go at? How long?
The 'slide show' was opened by the daughter of David Brower (sorry, I don't recall her name) who is a scholar on Yaks and gave a rather interesting presentation on Sherpa history and the environmental impact of yaks following the increase of tourism to Everest base camp.
After a short break Thomas Hornbein gave his presentation. While light on the slides and long on the direct readings I found it interesting--what I could hear. He wasn't talking into the mic and mumbled a bit from time to time making it extremely difficult for old guys like myself who've blasted their hearing from gunfire and loud music. I particularly found it touching when he talked about the loss of his teamates over the years.
The food was real good. The beer in the conference room was ridiculously expensive ($5.75 for a 12oz bottle of mirror pond) but Shredder quickly turned me onto the fact that you could walk down to the bar and get a pint of Terminal Gravity IPA for $4.50.
A good time for a good cause. Two thumbs up from me.
Another obvious cut and paste job. I refuse to believe Trask has the attention span required to write such a lenghty piece without masturbating. Several times.
In Portland, the show is a fundraiser. I don't mind supporting a worthy cause and listening to a guy spray about his impressive accomplishments. Its tax-deductible.
I bought mine brand new from Sierratradingpost.com for $135. I know of at least two others on here who did as well. Great tools for the alpine. Someone should snap these bad boys up--great deal with the leashes.
It was certainly a blast. Kudos to shred for leading the super scary second 'pitch' on Crown Jewel leading into the gulley. The mushrooms were uber hollow and I kept waiting for my fat ass to punch through to the torrent raging below. Instead I topped out only to be nearly swept off by the damn wind. The moss and choss gully scramble was icing on the cake.
I'm still high from such a spectaular day!
An easier way to create more friction whilst using skinny ropes is to just add another biner to the atc. If thats still not enough friction add a biner to your leg loop and re-direct the brake end of the rope through that biner too. I've never encountered a need for more friction than that and I've rapped off 6mm cord.
