Trip: The Sphinx - Lowe Route Date: 10/12/2007 Trip Report: Today, Spencer Winchester and I climbed the Lowe route on the Sphinx. With my recovery from my broken ankle complete, we decided to be juvinile delinquents and skip out on friday classes for some sick early season ice. We slept at the trail head camp sites, left camp around 6:30am, and reached the helmet sphinx saddle at around 8:30. We didn't realize the magnitude of the traverse to the route (a little bit sketchy). We reached the route after some iced slab traversing. We reached the summit at about 12:30 and hung out for a bit before descending and going back to bozeman. Another party was going to do the route when we were hitting the trailhead but never saw any sign of them. Upon my return I was bombarded with phone calls from people wanting to have some beta.... (here it is, the route is in). It was melting pretty good during the day and it was definitly cold the night before, so it should be forming up pretty fat within the next few weeks. However, I know of at least 4 separate parties going up there tommorrow for it, should be hacked to pieces by the second party. Pictures will be up soon!! Cheers: Dave Gear Notes: Full rack o screws including a 22 for the pillar. Ice lines. Approach Notes: be careful of bears it is a grizzly relocation site. while hiking we could smell a foul stench that Spence and I knew was from a bear. CARRY BEAR SPRAY!!!

I hope he has some deadly allergy to the herbal life vitamins.

I ate dog once. I was in the phillipines doing medical work with my dad when I was in 6th grade. A dog at a local village bit me and the owner then beheaded the dog on the spot and cooked it for lunch. It would have been rude and offensive to turn it down because it was his way of appologizing. It tasted weird, but kinda like chicken. -as for the dogs at the crag go, leave them home, I don't enjoy when a dog pisses on my pack like it did last week. when I find the owner they are gonna wish they never bought a dog!! That is terrible for you as a child to see. Beheading a dog? That is just wrong. I had definitely seen worse at that age!

Yeah, bozo locals gonna tear it up... just before Ice Fest too! gonna be sickness up there. maybe someone will send the direct start in the cave of bulldog world. those bolts are waiting to be whipped on!!

they're pretty effin sweet. they go in super easy due to the teeth geometry because they beveled the inside edge instead of it being flat. The coffee grinder is conical now so they are easier to take out. leave it to BD to make the best and keep blowing everyone away.

no, if he doesn't believe he's injured, he's crankin. he came off of acl surgery and redpointed a 5.13 in the summer. I also heard Tapley shaves with his Tools and flosses with his ice line.... Effin crazy!! Go Pete

Yeah, I do too actually and it hasn't happened to me, but when lead soloing with a grigri I want to know for sure that it is going to catch so I use a 10.2mm. Take Wayne's advice and go with the soloist, it really is easier.
-
I got desensitization shots and they turned my life around. I can actually enjoy spring, summer, and fall!!!! hooray for drugs!!!
-
with the grigri, just make sure you're using a rope at 10mm or above, the grigri has trouble biting on anything smaller than 10mm. I witnessed an accident at a local crag, the 9.5mm rope didn't catch, the belayer thought it would, but it didn't and the guy decked. Anywho, soloing is a blast!!

Porter, i know how you feel, i am just coming off my recent broken foot and ankle from my fall on prusik 7 weeks ago. got back out climbing for the first time last friday. still a bit weak though. just hang in there, I broke my tibia playing football 4 years ago, it took a long time for me to be back at it again like 3 months, but you will be back!!! good luck man.

well said foraker.... how did our country obtain all the freedoms that we have? Did we fight for it, and didn't we use an army? Why is it a problem to have one, and why not let them advertise on CC? Lets get back to those TRs, and partner hookups! I'm Out.
-
who the F**K cares. I have buddies over there. The army defends our selfish asses, let them advertise!! I have nothing but respect for those guys, you all should too.

i disagree on the #5 on prusik. save some weight and bulk, a #4 will do you fine on the first pitch. hope you can tic those routes, have a good one. i'm jealous!!!! -
