  1. Mammut Extreme outer with the OR Alti Mitt Inner liner. Im a pussy and get cold hands, this is the warmest functional setup I could come up with. I also use a pair of OR Contact gloves as replacement liners if the first pair get wet. As for color... the Mammut Extremes I got are an older model and are in a blaze orange and blue... Go Broncos!
  2. Mammut Lazer = Solid I use mine for everything.
  3. Hilleberg tents are great and so is the customer service. I accidentally crushed a pole holding cup and they sent me a new one the next day free of charge. Anyhow, I own a Soulo, Allak, and Keron 4 GT. Been in up to 80mph in the Allak with not problems, the thing is built like a brick shithouse.
  4. ASmith pretty much said it all... I too tried nearly every manufactured pack imaginable before getting 2 Mchale packs. I now own a full dyneema super sarc P&G and a cordura Critical mass II. Nothing comes close to their comfort for carrying heavy loads period. Going up to Camp Schurman last year I was carrying all of our team gear in my Mchale pack... tent, shovel, stove, fuel, rope, water filter, wands, and god knows what else. With water the pack was a good 65lbs. I jogged up to glacier basin in 55 min and took nap. Once the 2 teams showed up i noticed some folks were struggling. For some this was their first experience carrying a heavy load for a long distance. All had reputable packs made by industry leading manufacturers. Due to a combination of fatigue and discomfort I ended up hauling some gear for people. I loaded on NF mountain 25 tent, another rope, some fuel, and a few bags of stuff. I maxed my pack out around 100lbs and kept going. The only time it seemed the pack was heavier is when I had to pick it up and put it on. Anyhow it was great all the way up and back from camp. Regarding durability... if a mob of crazed samurai wielding Hanzo swords were to attack you and you had the following choices: 1. Hide inside a Arcteryx Bora 95 2. Hide inside a Lowe Alpine Crossbow 90+15 3. Hide inside a Gregory Denali Pro 4. Hide inside a Dana Designs Astralplane 5. Hide inside a Mchale dyneema pack Go with 5.

    Dropping a Tree

I worked with a tree removal company in college. To remove a tree that size without making a big mess you need a tree climbing belt, tree climbing boot spikes, rope, and a chainsaw long enough to cut through a wide tree. You start at the bottom and limb it as you climb up. Once you get to a point where you cannot climb the tree anymore you want to rope it off the top and have some ground men pull the top away while you top it with your chainsaw. After topping the tree you downclimb and cut it down one roll at a time being careful not to cut your own lanyard. That is how we used to do it... dropping them all at once creates a huge mess.
  6. Nobody is "owed" or "deserves" anything in this life. If you think you are, you have not fully grown up yet. I get by with good health, a first aid kit, and disaster health insurance. Perhaps I will get a better plan down the road when I can afford it. Government cannot even run itself, how the hell can it manage my health care? Lastly, I am so thankful that Obama will let me "keep" my current plan, it is so gracious for him to let me keep what I am already earned.
  7. Yes they are $$$$ but they are the best packs anywhere period... Sure you can try it on before buying, he will mail a demo to try on, it is all here http://www.mchalepacks.com/ordering/index.htm In the end it will fit your perfectly simply because it is made for you. I live locally, so I was able to drive up to his shop and have mine fitted. He is an expert and you will not be left unsatisfied with the product you get. Regarding fiddling with the pack, I knew what I wanted so there was no need.... Look at the stuff on his site and pick the features you want.
  8. Sell your car and get a Mchale Dyneema pack.... http://www.mchalepacks.com/ultralight/index.htm My pack is half way down the page, gray-yellow-white dyneema. Best pack I've ever owned, sub 4lbs, hauls loads like no other and will last a lifetime.... Cilogear = overrated for people they do not fit.
  9. Although I do not own one I've heard great stuff about the Hilleberg Akto... http://estore.websitepros.com/1764795/-strse-64/Akto/Detail.bok I do own a Hilleberg Soulo and love it. I decided on the Soulo because I'm 6'6" and it is one of the roomier one person tents out there, free standing, and bomber. Both are on the expensive side but you get what you pay for.
  10. I have one of those in 75cm and love it... their website says they are available I contacted Ushba and they are in fact no longer in production. There is a guy there who has a few in his private collection but he would not even quote me a price for one....
  11. If you get unlucky with the wind like I did last May, it will probably get ripped to shreds
  12. Yup, the Squamish is a great wind shell. Marmot Mountain Works had them for $69 when I got mine, love it.
  13. I have an older camp ice axe (early 60's I'm guessing) that is in nearly pristine condition(it would just take some scotch bright to clean up any rust). There is a guy that wants to buy it but I have no idea of its value..... I've seen older ice axes on Ebay go for up to $300+. Honestly, I do not want to get shafted if I sell it. Any help would be appreciated, attached a pic of it.
  14. You think those look "pimp"? They look like my old welding goggles. I guess if you go with the entire "industrial" look complimented with a required "Neubauten" tattoo on the side of you freshly shaved head... No... everyone who has seen me wear them thinks they are pimp. I had them made because I wanted some old school looking glacier goggles that would be made with higher quality than old school goggles.
  15. I checked out Opticus last year. However, I couldn't find a manufactured frame that fit my face well. I ended up going with some custom prescription glacier goggles from: http://www.atomefabrik.com/pages_goggles/glaciers.htm The quality of these goggles is exceptional and they look pimp.
  16. Markwebster, here you go..... I was looking for a beefy sewing machine last year. After extensive research, I got a Singer Slat O Matic Rocketeer for $10 off craigslist. It is the last all metal singer made before they came out with plastic ones. You can find these on craigslist any week..... I have yet to find fabric that my Rocketeer will not punch through. It punches through 3 layers of ballistic nylon like butter, not to mention 2-3 layers of fairly thick leather. The old singers run like freight trains and you can find people practically giving them away! You can read about them here http://www.geocities.com/possumjim/xhtml/collect_sewing_500a.html http://www.singer500a.info/index.htm Best Bang for the buck hands down.
  17. I'd say leave it for dead and get a hilleberg ;p
  18. I could skip work friday... what route do you have in mind? Jim

    Close Gitmo?

I think we should let them out and give them the old WACO compound. As soon as they start doing stupid terrorist shit, we send in Janet Reno to torch them all at once.
  20. Ya, the FF Vireo and the Wild Things half bag both work really well.
  21. Get a fooking Hilleberg Allak. Or better yet.... there is a guy on Craigslist selling a Nallo GT 2 for $450. It would smoke either of those tents.
  22. Now the fat asses that cant run away from the bears can shoot them.
  23. Pack is new, gray, and in like new shape. I roll with my Mchale pack so much I never use it... $200 obo
