All of those fumbling disasters resulted in quicker victories than we'll ever achieve in Iraq with a massively funded, enormous standing army. So much for the history lesson. Maintain a small, highly trained force to go after those bad terrorists and provide the 'seed potatoes' for a larger force, should it be needed, mothball a big pile of the the ships, subs, and other weapons systems we developed for the Cold War and no longer need, and watch that deficit dissappear in short order. There is no military threat the US faces that requires the force levels we have now. Ours is an offensive force, plain and simple. It's built for conquest. The trouble is, we suck at conquest, which has become a bit harder to do of late. Given the failures of our military power over the past 4 years (at the behest of our beloved president), I'd say it's a gross waste of money.

Why would the money run out? The project is on time and on schedule. The 'wrong order' is an oversimplification from an uninvolved outsider. If you had to weigh construction costs, threat of lawsuits, last use restrictions, political need to get something in place quick to prove the system to the public, uncertainties as to where future growth would occur, and a hundred other important factors (not just the inconvenience of your own driving habits), you might find that the solution Sound Transit came up with is a pretty damn good one. Also, there is no 'they'. 'We' are building light rail.

About 100,000 passengers a day fly in and out of Seatac, a figure which kind of puts the "who the hell commutes to the airport?" question in the proper light. The airport line will be able to carry 45,000 a day. Traffic is south King County is also increasing faster than other areas. The line will help with that as well.

In my book, that seems like a significant improvement. Criticisms similar to those found here were all levied against the BART and Portland's light rail. Now look at how those systems are performing. Current gas prices have already affected consumer behaviour in a big way. Take a look at Toyota's bottom line and sales volume as compared to GM and Ford and you'll see what I mean. Right here, Seattle voters are screaming for public transportation solutions. When gas is $5 a gallon, owners of larger vehicles will finally pay triple digits for a tank of gas. THAT, I predict, will get a whole lot of people's attention in a hurry. It's so much easier to multiply by a round number like $100, no?

I'm sure that most of the audience would agree with your assertion that using a Britta water filter completely negates a person's ability to put forth an opinion an just about anything scientific. And I'm sure your putting forth THAT opinion enhances your scientific standing among that very same audience. This argument is not about science as boogeyman, as you've erroneous (and uniquely) framed it. It's about very large companies, with non-altruistic motives, pushing an agricultural agenda that benefits their bottom line; not farmers, not consumers, not poor little Bagladeshis, and certainly not the environment. This agenda flourished (or is it fluorished?) during a time of plentiful rainfall, huge water projects, and lots and lots of irrigation, a lower population, lots of unused land, and very cheap fossil fuels; your so called "Green Revolution"; all of which are fast becoming things of the past. Eating local and organic is a must for a sustainable future, whether you're an African dirt farmer or a Belltown yuppie. It also just happens to result in a healthier diet and greater profits and self determination for farmers and local communities. The Green Revolution world we've built is an unsustainable, short term, environmentally damaging solution developed during a time of plenty that is fast drawing to a close. I realize that this kind of dynamic thinking is difficult to swallow when put forth by a water filtering cretin such as myself, but there you have it.

I agree with da Lee. Why not smooth demand, and thus efficiency, for large power plants (which tends to drop dramatically at night) by plugging in our cars? As for your pickup...better sell it while it's still worth something. At $5 a gallon, it won't be.

The average driving commute is 32 miles round trip, or 160 miles per week. Most people still commute solo. If you take at least one other person, the break even point, in terms of miles driven, for a weekend drive verses the average weekly commute is about 320 miles round trip; slightly further than the distance from Seattle to Leavenworth and back. It's a good thing to think about when deciding on what your next 'approach vehicle' is going to be.
