  1. really cool presentation on the slide: http://www.for.gov.bc.ca/ftp/RNI/external/outgoing/Marten%20Geertsema/landslide%20papers/11%20June%202012%20Lituya%20Mountain%20rock%20avalanche.pdf
  2. "salty breath" lol. I missed that one.
  3. Yeah, totally. Back when I was climbing, I was using an 11mm Bluewater for general cragging, and I'm pretty sure the damn thing will outlast me. Heavy, though.
  4. Come on, you guys can do better than this
  5. I've down climbed torment after getting injured, it pretty much sucked ass
  6. To be fair, that was a joke. Didn't it seem satirical enough? I'm sure that having even one less firefighter makes SOME kind of difference, unless they are all worthless. The fire chief kind of sounded like an idiot with his "we couldn't have done anything even with all the people in the world" -- in that case, why bother having a fire department at all? Not sure why the pole thinks this is your fault, though. Did you campaign to get rid of the fire department, or something?
  7. I hear colorado springs has a lot of minerals, though. true?
  8. "Obama gives himself control of all communication systems in America" That quote comes from the editorial, not the EO. Did you read the EO?
  9. That snow traverse looks pretty tame compared to photos I've seen of it late season. Looks like you guys had a great trip!
  10. lol, I love this place
  11. who wants to see my minerals? send PM
  12. YAY! Glad it's a happy ending. It seems to be pretty common for people to get lost coming down Adams when everything is still snowed over -- it's compounded by the fact that all of these wandering people have made a patchwork quilt of waytrails all around that area that help lead even more people astray ("look! a trail!"). You could wander around for a while.
  13. Minerals? Is that good to have?

sounds like youre doing it right! Maybe bring a cattle prod and teach the kids to zap you back to life when the old ticker finally gives out on the steeps? I think it's great you're doing this. I had a childhood like this, and it made me who I am today. Well, it made all the good parts of me, at least.
  15. In the world of Kevbone [font:Arial Black]"A Socialist is anybody who isn't or doesn't worship Ron Paul!"[/font] Wait, I thought that's who he called fascists?
  16. yellow alien!
  17. hey kev, how do you define socialism? curious
  18. And none of the old ones, either!

    First Aid Kit

dude, if someone you know has a stroke in the backcountry, they're probably F'ed anyway, aspirin or not. Focus on something productive, like gashes and broken bones. Kids having a stroke while hiking (the topic of this thread), or randomly passing someone else in the backcountry having a stroke, seem like they might not really be the statistical probabilities you should optimize for. For kids, I add the following stuff to my regular "gauze and bandages" kit -- bandaids (kids just seem to like them), blister-pads (worth every penny), extra duct-tape, itch creme, extra sunblock and children's Tylenol/advil/etc. and, last but not least, TWEEZERS. My kids attract splinters like magnets to a fridge.
  20. hmm, I'm trying to figure out the logic behind your position, Bill. Did your thought process go something like this? data points taken as fact: 1) Reduction in force didn't make any difference, whatsoever 2) 500% increase in force wouldn't have made any difference, either extrapolation: 3) it doesn't matter how many firefighters there are solution: 4) just get rid of all of them Q.E.D.
  21. ron paul has fake eyebrows
  22. congrats on the summit!
  23. did it smell like sulfur? You were on a giant volcano, you know.
  24. Great suggestion -- i wonder why I've never done this
