Once again a tight situation is solved by a well-lubed pussy.

poor kevbone, the cafe and you don't seem to be bosom buddies I'm glad that you son appears to not need spankings. I've never had to spank my son -- he's just not that kind of kid. (So far) he's never done anything to warrant it. I would, if it came to that, though. Maybe that's what keeps him in line? I dunno. He's kind of a book worm, and doesn't really act out. I don't have to do much for him to snap into line. My daughter, on the other hand, is the devil. She's had her fair share of spankings. Never enough to actually hurt her (I wouldn't call it beating!), but enough to sting, and to get her attention. She's a different kind of kid -- when she gets in her mood, nothing else snaps her out of it. When she is getting a spanking, I'm not irrational -- I explain what's going on and why she's getting a spanking, and then she goes into her room and cries for a bit and then comes out and we make up and it's all good. I haven't had to spank her in a long time, because it was such an effective deterrent. It sounds like you were beat as a child, which is different than a spanking. And it sounds like your experience has colored your view of ANY kind of corporal punishment as "beating." Too bad you were raised like that, but hopefully you can understand there is a difference between an enraged beating, and a controlled spanking. Maybe you don't agree, but don't paint the whole world with the same paintbrush, or your colors will run.
-
So, everyone else in the world who was "beat" is forced to "pass that on" to their children cause it's "all that they know" -- except for you, who was able to rise above it and make the conscious choice NOT to. Everyone else in the world is just a slave, inextricably bound to the parenting style of their parents. Except for you. Bravo!

Watch out for Aasgard. 3-4 days. Bring a rope.

My parents never beat me, and I firmly believe to this day that's why I'm such a fuckup.

You woulda had nothin' on me when I was a kid, old man. I love tabasco sauce, AND hiking. I'da walked all over you.

You need to open your mind, my friend. Don't you think it's possible that some people believe the human-cost of the war in Iraq is worth the freedom they perceive is being protected? I know you disagree with that concept, but if you can get off the soap-box for a few seconds and imagine that somebody COULD feel like that, then maybe you could understand the difference (in their mind) between abortion and the war in Iraq. It's not really a complicated concept.

providing access to an XBox was the best thing I ever did for my son's discipline, because now I can take it away, which, for him, is the equivilent of fire and brimstone.

Is this a troll? Conservative != Republican Liberal != Democrat The democratic party and the republican party are just groups of people. Liberalism and Conservatism are political ideologies. The Republican party was once more liberal than it is now, and the Democratic party was once more conservative. These things change. There are some Democrats who are more conservative than some Republicans, and there are some Republicans who are more liberal than some Democrats. The terms for one's party and one's political ideology are not interchangeable. For example, I am a liberal, but I'm NOT a member of the democratic party. The difference between the two ideologies is not a mystery, Kev. Haven't you ever taken any poly sci classes? Many conservatives are actually quite liberal and don't realize it. Of course, they'd likely never admit it, because some people have fostered divisiveness within the country by encouraging the use of these two terms as insults. I think this is wrong. I do not think there is anything wrong with the concept of conservatism, per se. I don't agree with most of the concepts of conservatism, but I think it's wrong to call them selfish, or always thinking about themselves. You can be a patriot and a conservative at the same time, you know.

thread drift I'm watching batman begins with my 8 yo son last night (is that child abuse? There, it's not thread drift) and bruce wayne gets out of his lamborgini with two women. I laughed and said, "Blake, he has TWO women!" And my son says, "Duh dad. He IS rich."

Kevin, merely causing pain does not constitute child abuse. For example, spanking is not child abuse. Every state has slightly different laws. Almost all have some exception listed like below We all know your position on the use of corporal punishment, but that doesn't automatically make it child abuse, "just cause you say so." I wasn't there, so I guess I can't really say.

Index. LOVE the rock, and the climbing is steep and works me over good. Plus, the climbs are all relatively nearby eachother, as opposed to leavenworth where they are all spread out. When I've been climbing at Index, and then climb anywhere else, I always feel stronger.

I've done almost all of my climbing (including winter) in a beat-up pair of old ex officio hiking pants I bought for $7 on sierratradingpost. If it's cold (i.e. winter) I wear a silk base-layer and some pataguci capilene underneath. I've always been plenty warm. In the summer, I wear nothing underneath and I'm cool. They're fairly water-resistent and stretchy. I like the marmot precip, but I can't remember the last time I wore them, or any hard-shell. Maybe 1 year ago, in the rain in boston basin? I barely even bring them with me anymore.

I've had a few weird moves mantelling up onto a ledge and getting the rack stuck in a crack as soon as I commit to the mantel and being forced to do this weird neck slouch to get the rack unstuck while trying ignore the extremely uncomfortable position I've finally found myself in, and trying not to wonder what would happen if I fell with the rack wrapped around my neck and stuck in a crack below me

you actually climb? WTF???? Now that would be weird to see you on a route!!!!!!! Hey, I'd clip a slow-moving dwarf...oops, sorry; I think you resemble that remark. that's gotta be the worst rejoinder ever.

So, I'm planning on taking a girl I know hiking this weekend and whipped out the dusty old alpine lakes guide book. Flipping through it, I happened to pass a description for the "assgard pass hike." Some gems from the description: Hiking Time: Allow 3 to 4 days (!) ...which may require an ice axe, sometimes rope and crampons... ...if determed to go this very steep, dangerous way... ...the ascent is the next thing to vertical... ...watch for cairns placed by the forest service... (the forest service? really?) wow, I've come down aasgard pass lots of times, I never realized it was so hard-core
