  1. or place an apostrophe before your entry "'1-84" will display as "1-84" Excel will let you know about the error you've made in formatting your date, but you can ignore it.
  2. If you can arrage it approach via mountaineers creek and have someone pick you up at ingalls (avoid the bivy if possible). If you're concerned about time I guess the upper ridge only makes sense, but don't skip the lower pitches just because you think they aren't worthwhile. The first few pitches were really quite good.
  3. Should've napped through it I guess
  4. It's not work if you're not working...
  5. No fair, how come my nudist encounter sucked and yours kicks ass?
  6. I took a solo trip up Kaleetan peak off the Denny Creek trail up at snoqualmie pass a couple summers ago. On the way down a dog comes around the corner so i stop and pet it and expect to see the owners any second. Yep, here they come now, two buck-naked middle-aged dudes with hiking sticks. They walk right up as though it's just as weird that I'm clothed as it is that they aren't and start making small talk. So I put my headphones back on, say "I gotta go" and take off. 15 seconds later I cross paths with who I presume was the father of one of these guys wearing not a stitch of clothing. Better yet I run into a large group (like a church youth group or something) headed up and I warn one of them, "don't hike too fast you might run into the nudists up ahead." "Oh we know, we saw them in the parking lot already."
  7. We can't even get the good weather right around here. The one sunny weekend of the season and it's too hot to do anything worthwhile:tdown:
  8. Don't forget you need a passport to go. The rest of my potential partners can't seem to remember this.
  9. I've got friends leaving tomorrow (Friday) morning, but I've got to work I'd like to leave tomorrow evening 6 - 7 and be back in Seattle around 6 Sunday evening. I don't necessarily need a ride back to Seattle either. I've got a car, but splitting gas money would be awesome. If you need a partner, that's cool too since I'd make the group 3 by myself. I'll lead up to 10a and follow 11's. The friends I'm meeting there can lead a bit harder.
  10. I think this is a great quote: "THE MOUNTAIN IS A LIFE TEACHER, because it gives you the most fulfilling sensation you could possibly get from life and teaches you how to think without fearing. One who fears should not attempt to climb; nonetheless, you must have a little prudence when you climb. One without prudence is crazy."
  11. I had heard 7 miles of road skiing before the trailhead as of last weekend.
  12. why not? it's a great ski run back to paradise. You shouldn't need them but I'd go for it.
  13. Do you still use the elliptical trainer? I think I had a bit of chondromalacia recently. It never prevented me from doing much except squats and basketball. The strange thing is it would feel better for a couple days after activity then get worse the lazier I was. So I used the eliptical. When I graduated from UW I no longer had access to the gym and I kept in shape by mostly running and biking. I figured these activities are harder on the knee and so I expected my pain to worsen. Not so, and actually I rarely have knee pain. I'm not saying the ellipticals are bad, but cross-train and stretch a lot. Also you mention sitting in a chair causes pain. Keeping my leg extended when sleeping or sitting helped, probably because it relieves pressure on the cartilage. I also tried to strengthen my quads by doing leg extensions, but only the last 20 deg of extention to keep the stress off the kneecap.
  14. Easy there pdx. He seems to be honest in presenting his and his brothers skill level. If you're going to introduce someone to glacier travel, the middle of the rope is the place to do it. But I should hope that the practice climbs would be done with the Rainier team to assess your new partner's skill level and competence.
  15. They also climbed it alpine style which for most of us is a ludicrous idea... I think if you're going to do the route very quickly then a tent like that would make sense, but if you're doing denali expedition style the extra space and security of a more substantial tent might be worth the weight.
  16. Oh yeah, nice pics too. It's not your fault the skies weren't blue.
  17. For those of us without snowmobile access, how much road skiing is required right now?
  18. Index general store - If you're getting some of the hot foods (burrito, corndog) buy one less than the number they have available and they'll usually throw in the last one free.
  19. Send me a PM with details of what you left behind and where so you can get it back.
  20. If you're training relatively hard you'll not want to skimp on your diet. That isn't to say that you shouldn't be working on a calorie deficit (assuming dropping some pounds is your goal). It's just that if you try to cut out too many calories you'll find yourself worn down and unable to train as hard as you're capable of. Shoot for 40-50% of calories from carbs (keep away from sugar as much as possible) and the remainder split between fat and protein. Eat around 5 meals a day not 3. When you are on a training hike, bike, stair stepping session, or whatever, eat a bit of carbs (100 or so calories) and a few swallows of water every hour to keep from crashing. This applies to your climbs this summer too. Drink lots of water all the time. It helps you recover from your workouts faster too. Use commmon sense for the most part. i.e. don't eat 40% of your calories in cocoa puffs and the rest in bacon. Whole grains, fruits, veggies, beans, lean meats...
  21. what about beer?
  22. That's actually a pretty good deal, but be aware that the quickdraws may not be as nice/functional/easy to use as say BD or Petzl etc. The rope is the same as found here: http://www.madrockclimbing.com/madrockropes.aspx Anyone have any input on Madrock Ropes? Or a rope is a rope, right? Less than $120 for a dry 60M is pretty good...
  23. thanks for the idea, that actually looks like a good option given the iffy weather most anywhere else. How are the crowds there this time of year? And even if it is bad, can you find some good out of the way spots?
