  1. Bailing can be a good idea too. Don't always attribute it to weakness. If you're not into a climb and force yourself to do it I feel that you're more likely to make mistakes, move slower, and pay less attention. Or maybe you have good reason for wanting to bail or just a gut feeling. It's good to listen to yourself. But I know what you're talking about especially when it's cold and dark at 4am and you'd rather be in bed. Partners are a great source of motivation. I find my partners are most of the time motivated when i'm not and vice versa. I'm much more likely to quit when I'm solo if I even get out of bed at all.

  3. When you say skeletal system are you referring to bones and joints or just joints? If you're talking about joints I would agree to a point. Any load bearing activity will strengthen bones as long as the bones aren't overloaded (meaning stress fractures, not breaking a leg from trying to lift too much). Some work in the weight room can improve joint stability saving wear and tear during other activities. But I agree that carrying a bunch of weight, especially down hill, is hard on the knees and perhaps ankles and hips. If you can, use water or rocks and dump it out at the top.
  4. Yep just like pup said in the half of the post I didn't read
  5. or place an apostrophe before your entry "'1-84" will display as "1-84" Excel will let you know about the error you've made in formatting your date, but you can ignore it.
  6. If you can arrage it approach via mountaineers creek and have someone pick you up at ingalls (avoid the bivy if possible). If you're concerned about time I guess the upper ridge only makes sense, but don't skip the lower pitches just because you think they aren't worthwhile. The first few pitches were really quite good.
  7. Should've napped through it I guess
  8. It's not work if you're not working...
  9. No fair, how come my nudist encounter sucked and yours kicks ass?
  10. I took a solo trip up Kaleetan peak off the Denny Creek trail up at snoqualmie pass a couple summers ago. On the way down a dog comes around the corner so i stop and pet it and expect to see the owners any second. Yep, here they come now, two buck-naked middle-aged dudes with hiking sticks. They walk right up as though it's just as weird that I'm clothed as it is that they aren't and start making small talk. So I put my headphones back on, say "I gotta go" and take off. 15 seconds later I cross paths with who I presume was the father of one of these guys wearing not a stitch of clothing. Better yet I run into a large group (like a church youth group or something) headed up and I warn one of them, "don't hike too fast you might run into the nudists up ahead." "Oh we know, we saw them in the parking lot already."
  11. We can't even get the good weather right around here. The one sunny weekend of the season and it's too hot to do anything worthwhile:tdown:
  12. Don't forget you need a passport to go. The rest of my potential partners can't seem to remember this.
  13. I've got friends leaving tomorrow (Friday) morning, but I've got to work I'd like to leave tomorrow evening 6 - 7 and be back in Seattle around 6 Sunday evening. I don't necessarily need a ride back to Seattle either. I've got a car, but splitting gas money would be awesome. If you need a partner, that's cool too since I'd make the group 3 by myself. I'll lead up to 10a and follow 11's. The friends I'm meeting there can lead a bit harder.
  14. I think this is a great quote: "THE MOUNTAIN IS A LIFE TEACHER, because it gives you the most fulfilling sensation you could possibly get from life and teaches you how to think without fearing. One who fears should not attempt to climb; nonetheless, you must have a little prudence when you climb. One without prudence is crazy."
  15. I had heard 7 miles of road skiing before the trailhead as of last weekend.
  16. why not? it's a great ski run back to paradise. You shouldn't need them but I'd go for it.
  17. Lows? as in low top??? What kind of condition are they in?
  18. Do you still use the elliptical trainer? I think I had a bit of chondromalacia recently. It never prevented me from doing much except squats and basketball. The strange thing is it would feel better for a couple days after activity then get worse the lazier I was. So I used the eliptical. When I graduated from UW I no longer had access to the gym and I kept in shape by mostly running and biking. I figured these activities are harder on the knee and so I expected my pain to worsen. Not so, and actually I rarely have knee pain. I'm not saying the ellipticals are bad, but cross-train and stretch a lot. Also you mention sitting in a chair causes pain. Keeping my leg extended when sleeping or sitting helped, probably because it relieves pressure on the cartilage. I also tried to strengthen my quads by doing leg extensions, but only the last 20 deg of extention to keep the stress off the kneecap.
  19. I figure someone around here probably bought these for a trip to Alaska and wouldn't mind parting with them. I wear a size 11 boot. The vapor barrier liner would preferably be cheap or a beater 'cause it's not something I want to use but want to bring in case my bag starts losing loft. This is of course for a trip to Denali, so if you have other gear that you just don't use since your Denali trip but found useful, let me know. Maybe a duffel bag (for the sled and travel), 5000+ ci pack, stuff/compression sacks...
  20. Easy there pdx. He seems to be honest in presenting his and his brothers skill level. If you're going to introduce someone to glacier travel, the middle of the rope is the place to do it. But I should hope that the practice climbs would be done with the Rainier team to assess your new partner's skill level and competence.
  21. They also climbed it alpine style which for most of us is a ludicrous idea... I think if you're going to do the route very quickly then a tent like that would make sense, but if you're doing denali expedition style the extra space and security of a more substantial tent might be worth the weight.
  22. Oh yeah, nice pics too. It's not your fault the skies weren't blue.
  23. For those of us without snowmobile access, how much road skiing is required right now?
