3 of us went up the S. Side yesterday (1/26) which ended up being more of a suffer-fest than anything. The winds were strong out of the south\southwest and visibility was poor. Somehow the NOAA forecast kept convincing our brains that the current conditions were "temporary" and the blue sky would magically appear and the winds would die and the snow would make us yearn for more days like this. Alas reality won out. Anyhow, I think when we started there was a practical realism in what was realistic and safe. The snow was drifting so it was either knee deep drifts or icy crust. My poles had a rime ice layer by the time we hit the top of the Palmer. Skiing down was great for the last 1/4 mile, but the rest was mostly "just getting down"... WIT method. -r

I skinned up to Tilly Jane today. Lots of fresh snow and more falling. It was pretty windy, but not near as windy as last Thursday (and apparently yesterday). The snow conditions were awesome however. -r

I might head up tomnorrow to do some backcountry skiing. Not 100% sure. PM me if you are still heading up. -r

There was a lot of avalanche detonation occuring yesterday. With another 6-12 inches over the next 36 hours, I bet we don't see a complete turnaround in avy conditions. Sufferfest really understates the "knock me down" wind gusts above the tree line. -r

Come down to Hood and ski Oh yeah, last time.. 50 mph winds, 5 degree f. Hmmmm... -r

Or having your customer bring in his "expert" buddy who read that and contradicts your help...mostly due to the buddies 90 minutes of reading the latest gear review and a strong need to inflate their frail male ego. Having worked too many years in outdoor retail, I feel like sending a sympathy card to my favorite shops at the end of the season. -r
