This is really funny. I remember pulling a stump out with a rope behind my truck one time, kinda like described above. The rope broke and hit my tailgate so hard...it dented in at least an inch. I wasn't laughing so hard then. Had the rope ended up any higher, it would have gone through the back window--and I felt quite lucky after I realized that. Nice experiment; thanks for sharing!

Lots to steep/high/tall steps in places on the way up to Pebble...so guess it depends on the weight of your child. You might want to check with NPS...to see if they allow wheels on the trail. You wouldn't want to end up getting a ticket. I don't think they allow "wheels" in general on the non-paved trails...and if they allow yours, I'm taking my MTB up tomorrow! Most folks end up carrying their kids, so I suppose that would be the NPS response...carry your kid.

Click does well for the i-net connection, and the local service folks rock...by giving personal service if you have any issues. They also allow checking/sending of non-click email, which Comcast disabled about 2 years ago. I wouldn't go back to Comast...click is highly recommended.

You won't mistake a cougar running away from you if you can see the tail; it's long, and can appear as a moon cresent...or a long flagpole. A bobcat and lynx on the other hand, have very small tails. The lynx can be found in Canada and generally has larger feet than the BC for walking in snowy terrain. There's lots of bobcats in the PNW...and are a rare treat to see. That's what I know about them. There's more information here... Differences between lynx and bobcats

My Genie rocks. Have taken it on 3 day trips and appreciated the 1.0+ lbs. Have thought to put on a couple of lightweight compression straps on each side, and small pockets on the sides for pickets, and it'd be my total fav. That's the only mods I'd make on it.

I need to bail from a planned 5 day round-the-mountain trip on the Wonderland trail... dates within the next week (for 2 people). I hear all the campsites are full... and would hate to see our reservations go to waste. The reservations cost me $20 to make months ago, and I'd like to get the $$ back, if possible. PM me if interested, and I'll share campsite locations and dates.

Pls post a TR when you return!

Oleg...send Fairweather a PM...he's got the LD on the crux parts of the Adams trip (the big Muddy??). Nice work...hope you'll post your next round-the-mountain TR too!

Along the same lines... I've seen WA State Patrol boys using some radar or something that they put up to their face, to sight speeders (it looks like one of those old stereo photo viewers). It's not sending out any of the usual signals, including laser. Anyone know about this new device??

Good work there, TT, looking up the details of that Kautz crash. There were a couple of other plane crashes... I think the one in Molenaar's book...talks about the single engine that landed between Liberty Cap and the Rim...and couldn't get started. The pilot pushed the plane down the slope, and glided...with a landing on Mowich Lake (it was winter time). Pretty gutsy effort. There was also a plane that crashed into the crater, but I don't remember when. It hung down in some of the summit ice caves, and it was possible to see some of the parts and debris when caving for a few years. Haven't been look'in for the wreckage for awhile, but I'm guessing it could be found with some effort. If I remember right, it was on the E to SE side of the E crater (quite close to where the DC route typically comes up {a tad north of there}).

There was a twin engine Cessna that crashed on the Kautz in the early '80's. If I remember right, they were pro rodeo folks, transiting between rodeos. I think they flew off most of the crash debris off with a large chopper, but there was likely some stuff that was missed...that's been floating in the ice towards the terminus of the glacier since then. Think it was an August storm...and they were flying in the clouds and crashed upon impact. Some people that I know were hired to clean up the site and carry personal belongings down to Paradise. That's my best recollection of the event. Didn't make any notes...and the details are fuzzy. Perhaps the debris you found was from this crash. I'm not sure if there were other crashes on the Kautz??

Maybe worth a new thread...LG...what are your fav l-worth trails??

Word from a local friend in Huaraz is that Alpamayo "might" go up the French route (as of last week), since the Ferrari is impassible. Huascaran might go via the escudo, vs. the regular route...which sounds like traverse area going into CII is more dangerous than usual--and is being avoided. He mentioned the conditions were just poor in general, on both peaks. It didn't sound like it was an "ice" problem, which has been the case in past years. Based upon your post, these peaks are probably not on your list, but you didn't say. Be sure to post a TR on whatever you do. Have a great trip...it's a fun place!

darstog...thanks for the feedback, and will look forward to hearing 'bout your experiences with the Epic tent. A friend of mine used one for some 30 days in a pretty hostile place, and although I didn't hear from him directly about the tent, rumor was he liked it. May end up getting one sooner, rather than later. Seam sealed...that's good news. Maybe is more waterproof than I'm thinking it is... May bump into you at the city...planning on pretty much the same scenario. Best of luck with your studies.

Darstog, The BD Firstlight and the new OR eVent tent seems like two different types of tents. The Firstlight is listed at 2 lbs. 11 oz. (Epic fabric-"Highly water-resisant"), and the OR tent is eVent (more "waterproof??"), and much heavier. I was thinking to purchase the Firstlight for lightweight trips, when the weather looks reasonable, but where I didn't need a bomber structure or super waterproof (if it was super wet, I'd turn back). How do you like your FL?? Do you recommend it for the kinds of trips I'm thinking of using it for? Anything worth noting about the tent? Thanks much for whatever info you can share.

Hey Mikey...glad you're not on those sea rescues!

NOT true. Within the last couple of years, there have been rescues on Rainier that required helicopters, but those with high altitude capabilites were NOT available. During those hot summer days, the little choppers were not able to make it to Camp Muir--even for life threatening emergencies. The routine was...sled the patient down to Pan Point, and pick up there. If I remember right, some patients had to be moved all the way down to Paradise for a heli-pick up. Many of these rescues, were of course, done on blue bird, windless days...but the weather was HOT, and the lift capabilities of all aircraft was reduced (which really affected the less powerful birds available, and limited their use, at least in MRNP). Not sure if the Chinkooks will be available, or not...

Have humped a ski bike to Muir a few times; man, that some fun stuff! Did 8's all the way down to Pan point, then out through Edith Creek basin to PDise. I'd love to have one to try again!

I once saw a guy peel off Midway...as 4 SMC Camlocks pulled out. He just missed Jello tower on the way down. The "rescue" by the county sheriff is a whole 'nother story, but of similar mis...effectiveness. Put the Camlocks in your own collection, or sell'em. There are better active or passive devices these days.
