alien DNA in your water. the incubation period is over!! DESTROY IMMEDIATLY!!!!!!

ok, i'll admit i'm a relative newbie on the subject, but this doesn't jive. Direction of force: even with a basic z-system the forces are pulling towards the crevasse. you are pulling away from it, but the force on the anchor is coming from the secondary pully. multiplied force: force of haulers X force (weight) of hualee. i know this is over simplified, and someone else would better exlpain it. am i out in left field here?

public land is public land. no one can claim rights or ownership (unless you're a multimillion $ mining corporation...but that's another thread) it's my understanding that any motorized equipment (gas / electric) is illegal in wilderness areas, even for the land managers (although, exceptions are granted) would i go out to climb it? yes. i would not 'rat' them out to the land managers though, since it would open the location up to probable bureaucratic mayhem. i believe management/policing from the users of the area is the best option.

yeah, my post looks like i'm recommending zips. i don't! i had trouble with mine, crashed my system, had to zero out HD and start over, and i still have a corrupt zip disc full of irreplaceable data that i can't bring myself to throw away. it sits there on my desk and taunt's me. hey, anyone wanna buy a zip drive? (no exp with mkey)
-
there are devices called 'memory keys' but the products that came up on a google search didn't seem to hold much. zip drives (iomega) hold 100, 250, and ?? MB of data

thanks for the info, shred!

Stephan, unfortunately the budget is not pooled and shared like that. each division (in this case 'transportation' (or something to that effect)) has they're own budget and the can't give the leftovers to another division

i worked for the blm in roseburg several years ago. they bought two of these to max out their budget so it wouldn't be dropped the following year. they didn't tow shit! worst part about it was how the clear-cut-specialists stood around it, scratching their nuts, admiring that fine piece of american made, gas guzzling machinery. same guys who had the "earth first, we'll log the other planets later" bumper stickers.

Thanks all (especially the TAY tip) Unless I go for a long drive, I think i'm SOL down here in OR until fall.

beware of the cock, cluck. he's got an ornery look in his eye. suspect cock has ulterior motives with your chicken. -

As a newbie, I've gone up Hood (SS) with 11 other mazamas of varied skill levels. I won't do that again. Too messy and confusing. Much slower. Greater chance of no-summit. Most importantly, it's much harder for newbies to raise concerns or outright objections due to weather/route/leadership failure/ etc.

Hey all, I have some fish-newbie questions... has anyone fished the lakes in Indian Heavens Wilderness? is it allowed? are there fish? are there many/any subalpine lakes devoid of fish in the cascades? recommend a good web source for this info? thanks!

Chirp, it's definitely Rattlesnake Plantain (Goodyera oblongifolia). the type specimen has a network of white marks (like snakeskin) on the leaves, but this species shows a lot of variation (dark green with midrib vs. lighter green with snakeskin pattern). This is an orchid, not a plantain. The leaves can resemble a plantain, hence the name. Excellent field guide suggestion above (Plants of the PNW, Pojar, MacKinnon). For the super botano-geeks, Flora of the PNW, Hitchcock & Cronquist is the leading authority (all key, no photos)...although up in WA it may be replaced by now (or in the process of). when buying a field guide, the more local the guide (in scope), the better luck you'll have identifying. More info...(invasives, plant lists, listserves, etc.) Native Plant Society of Oregon: http://npsoregon.org/ Native Plant Society of WA: http://www.wnps.org/ (damn! Wnps site kicks npsO's ass) Native PLant Society of BC: http://eflora.bc.ca/ (very cool) USDA Plants site: http://plants.usda.gov/ (can query, but scope is national and is cumbersome to find local species) happy botanizing!!
