  1. Stephan, unfortunately the budget is not pooled and shared like that. each division (in this case 'transportation' (or something to that effect)) has they're own budget and the can't give the leftovers to another division
  2. i worked for the blm in roseburg several years ago. they bought two of these to max out their budget so it wouldn't be dropped the following year. they didn't tow shit! worst part about it was how the clear-cut-specialists stood around it, scratching their nuts, admiring that fine piece of american made, gas guzzling machinery. same guys who had the "earth first, we'll log the other planets later" bumper stickers.
  3. Thanks all (especially the TAY tip) Unless I go for a long drive, I think i'm SOL down here in OR until fall.
  4. DUMBASS, DUMBASS!!!! I vote for Dumbass! Hey 007, write up TR when you get back! I wanna hear all about how easy it was for you!
  5. beware of the cock, cluck. he's got an ornery look in his eye. suspect cock has ulterior motives with your chicken.
  6. anywhere to get a decent run in the cascades or is it all crap now?
  7. correction... suburban driving NWIF soccer moms (NWIF: no way i'd fu##)
  8. "bring major league education to portland"
  9. As a newbie, I've gone up Hood (SS) with 11 other mazamas of varied skill levels. I won't do that again. Too messy and confusing. Much slower. Greater chance of no-summit. Most importantly, it's much harder for newbies to raise concerns or outright objections due to weather/route/leadership failure/ etc.
  10. Hey all, I have some fish-newbie questions... has anyone fished the lakes in Indian Heavens Wilderness? is it allowed? are there fish? are there many/any subalpine lakes devoid of fish in the cascades? recommend a good web source for this info? thanks!
  11. does not groove with
  12. uuhh...you want your mom to get a boob job???? you gotta let those issues go...
  13. "I Love Mormon Pussy" on the back window of a caravan. not really my favorite, but couldn't stop laughing when i saw it.
  14. cost of vanity: 2 butt cheeks benefit of vanity: $17.5 million lawsuit WTF!? you're kinda cute, bronco
  15. Chriznitch's last picture on his Cooper Spur TR (last wed) is of the hogsback.
  16. Chirp, it's definitely Rattlesnake Plantain (Goodyera oblongifolia). the type specimen has a network of white marks (like snakeskin) on the leaves, but this species shows a lot of variation (dark green with midrib vs. lighter green with snakeskin pattern). This is an orchid, not a plantain. The leaves can resemble a plantain, hence the name. Excellent field guide suggestion above (Plants of the PNW, Pojar, MacKinnon). For the super botano-geeks, Flora of the PNW, Hitchcock & Cronquist is the leading authority (all key, no photos)...although up in WA it may be replaced by now (or in the process of). when buying a field guide, the more local the guide (in scope), the better luck you'll have identifying. More info...(invasives, plant lists, listserves, etc.) Native Plant Society of Oregon: http://npsoregon.org/ Native Plant Society of WA: http://www.wnps.org/ (damn! Wnps site kicks npsO's ass) Native PLant Society of BC: http://eflora.bc.ca/ (very cool) USDA Plants site: http://plants.usda.gov/ (can query, but scope is national and is cumbersome to find local species) happy botanizing!!
  17. or set the bait and lurk in the bushes with a gun loaded with rubber bullets.
  18. hhmm...i've seen this before. i thought it was a wintergreen (pyrola), but that's not checking out. i'll check my keys and get back to you tomorrow. could you describe the spent flower and stalk?
  19. Sorry Dr. Crash I (somewhat) stand corrected... quote from Mt Adams Climbing General Info "Most mountain summits are the scene of only momentary visits, however Mount Adams has a history of human use that is varied and unusual. In 1921, the Forest Service completed construction of the highest fire lookout in the country. Due to the high elevation, heavy snows, and poor visibility, however, it was only staffed until 1924. Meanwhile, over 1,800 pounds of supplies were backpacked to the summit each season. In 1929, Dean Wade and the Glacier Mining Co. filed a mining claim to obtain sulfur at the summit. Primarily a prospecting operation, the mine was most active from 1932 to 1936. The claim expired 1959. A trail suitable for horses and mules, was constructed to the summit. A total of 168 pack trains made the trip to the summit each year" Sounds like it was built as a fire lookout, but most sources I looked up referred to it as the miners hut/shack/etc. probably should have looked this up before opening my trap.
  20. i'd have to agree with some of you that the plaques are litter. granted they probably mean a lot to friends and family who put them there, but for everyone else it's just trash. a friend in CO picks up trash whenever he goes backpacking or climbing. sometimes that would mean coming down with a summit register to dispose of it properly. go john!
  21. Sunday: raced in McCubbins Gulch scramble 6 miles up and down valley walls (3 times each), 6 creek crossings, over and under log jams, barbed wire fences, running away from pissed off hornets, etc. etc. Ran through last creek across the finish line, couldn't find the water coolers so I nursed from the keg instead. best time I've ever had beating the crap out of myself!!
  22. the summit is actually northeast of the miners hut. it's hard to believe that these glissading accidents keep happening!?!?! why are people not getting this message? isn't there a sign at ColdSprings TH??
  23. for all Oregon and Washington fires: http://www.or.blm.gov/nwcc/ click 'media and public fire info' then map or summary Eventually, the summary page will link to the site posted by thrutch (much more detailed)
