  1. has anybody done this route, good? Can you solo?
  2. So this dogs bring the sunshine, you know where I can get one of those We went over towards I-Rock. Stopped short and tried to keep tracks off the groomers till T-line. It was a Mazama class. A lot of basic/obvious stuff, but they really hammer Avi safty, and reading the terrain.
  3. So that is you with the Yellow Lab. I was with a Ski Mountaineering class who passed you on our way to the top of palmer. It was a great day, shorts and light synth. Wish I could have made it the summit. Seem like it would have have been great conditions to ski the Hogs Back from the Pearly Gates. Given what we found for Avi I would not have done West Crater Rim. Too bad I for got to pack my Hawiian shirt
  4. From what I have read you should not be the only person with the problem of picking up the older beacons. The larger the range of nearest frequencies the beacon is able to pick up the better. Does someone have the numbers on them, I think I have them at home. My question is that really a problem people have, the inability to pick up other beacons? Or is it just the older ones?
  5. Prior to reading the Jan issue of Off-Piste I was going to buy the Barryvox beacon. But now the Pieps DSP looks like a better product, is it? How do people like the Barryvox? How do peole like the Pieps DSP? Thanks
  6. I went throught the mounainteers books sight and was looking at these books, Rock and Ice mag's Gear, Rock climbing:Mastering Basic Skills (not too sure how much this will help), The Outdoor Knots Book. I will check out John Long's books as well.
  7. Since I am unable to take a class on more advanced rock climbing teck, I decided that at least I could learn about by reading. Are there any that would be good. Looking into leading trad (have a good start on a decent rack), and Aid climbing.
  8. I would think this weekend would be almost ideal. After the rain and the wam temps. Looks like sunday would be the best of the two days.
  9. I would like to know as well.
  10. Has anybody done this in Portland? How much would it cost? I had my liners thermo fitted and my right foot still falls asleep, boot is just a bit too snug. Should I try reheating my liner for a second try at the fit? I have only done two trips in them. Or do a couple more trips to see if they packout?
  11. The cascade lakes hwy is closed this time of year so how do people get back there? Ski? How long is that? Would it be possible to do Broken Top in one day?
  12. Climb: Mt Thielson-Regular route Date of Climb: 12/18/2004 Trip Report: With the good weather decided to to Thielson (my first trip)for some winter rock. Got a late start at 7:30 am nearly skinned to the base of the summit pinnacle, stashed my skiis. The snow was a little thin on the upper slopes. The scramble to the summit was basically ice and snow free. After picking up my skiis I climbed down a couple hundred feet for what I would hope to be better snow, but no such luck. Hit a few hidden rocks on the way down but lower down the snow was great. Next time with better snow coverage skiing from the base of the summit would be a great trip. Also skiing the western bowl would be SWEET. All and all a great fun trip. Gear Notes: ski or snowshoes, Ice axe and crampons Approach Notes: snow all the way.
  13. nice vid. good way to start the day
  14. I am looking into doing a winter climb on three finger, would I need to bring some pitons for the final pitch? Think I would need tools as well?
  15. Why would liquid stoves put out more CO than canister? Do canister burn more clean? Thanks for the info, ventilation would be the major consern. Might be time for a trip to the local hardware store
  16. So there are a couple of ways to make my own, well then I await your guidence oh master;)

    tent repair

do you have an address for TA enterprises?
  18. I was up on hood this weekend and cooking any place other than inside your tent was not an option. I was unable to place my liquid fuel stove on the floor of my tent for fear of tiping it. So now for a new piece of gear. Are there liquid fuel hanging stoves? All I have seen are canister, why (would rather not buy a new stove)? Also has anybody made a hanging stove? Any other cosiderations?

    tent repair

Ok this is the first time for any tent repair for me, time to loose my cherry. How do you repair tent poles? One of mine snapped on Hood this weekend.
  20. After we ran into you we hiked a couple more miles for a kick in the pants view of the sistas. Went to bend for much beer and crashed out at a local hot spot. I think they call it the econo lodge
  21. How is the cascades lakes highway? Also how is the road going to pole creek? How much snow is on the pole creek trail?
  22. what about the coverage up higher? I was thinking about taking my board up to the summit.
  23. I have been reading about the different setups people have and think I have narrowed my choices down. I am some what an advanced skier. This winter I plan on doing Leuthold, maybe reed headwall (if not too crazy and the 50 deg bulge), sandy headwall and Wyeast (yes all on hood). For the skiis I am looking at K2 shuksan, Volkl Norber Jones, and Atomic tm:ex. Why have I not heard that much abou the K2's? What about twin tips for the BC? How well to skins attach to the twin tips? Now for the bindings. The Dynafit are the lightest, but will they stand up to what I have planned? Also would one type of ski work better than the other? Has anybody tried out the silveretta pure bindings? As for boots I am going to wait and try on to see what fit best. I am trying to find the lightest setup for aggressive skiing.
  24. I will have to agree with those who are critical of your alpine adventure. I would never have attempted such a route with out being adequately prepared. If you had an injury you would have not only risked that persons life you could have risked the lives of those who would rescue you. If such a case arose I hope they charge you for it. As they should charge all those who go into the woods with no clue. I hope you learned a lot.
  25. Looking for guide books for alpine climbs in the jasper/banff (sp?) area. Are there any books simular to the Becky books? Where can I find them? Is that whole area under the Canadian Rockies name? Looked locally and only found mixed climbs, and not summits.
