your sarcasm detector is broken. imo, while some might have moral outrage over this, it is just simple enforcement of laws that have been on the books since when the crime was committed.

until someone comes up with a better plan (lobotomies?), all we have is consistent enforcement of the law.

well you seem to be saying that since the victim has settled, then the issue is closed. i disagree. i certainly am empathetic to the victim, and maybe that is what you are saying...but it has nothing to do with criminal prosecution that the victim doesn't want prosecution.

no shit...just because the victim of a crime like that decided to take the money and settle doesn't mean the guy should go free. again, there are two domains at play (civil and criminal)

regarding victims and criminals, it isn't always so clear cut. there is a reason there is a civil and criminal as separate legal domains. clearly the victims was fine with the civil settlement, but they really have nothing to do with the violation of federal/state laws. i served on a jury were the victim was a guy who was being beaten by his girlfriend. both of them wanted the case just to go away, but it wasn't a civil case. IMO both of them should have been in jail...apparently they like get drunk and trade off on beating the shit out of each other and then calling the police in solve the situation...and then when sober deny everything and make up. apparently that same judge had seen them about 5-6 times on the same charges (victim and aggressor swapped a couple of times) but we could not convict due to suppressed evidence.

well it is a "new route". many of the climbs at the crag don't go to the "summit" either

violent retribution, while very romantic, has a funny way of resulting in legal/financial repercussions for the "hero". not always, but much of the time.
