I sold my pre-ban Mini 14 to buy an engagement ring. Owning a beautiful semi-automatic assault rifle is much like being married to a beautiful woman... keep it clean and well maintained, always treat it with respect, act like it's loaded at all times... and hope to die with it in your arms.

TR: Vegas Hose Monster We hiked around to the top of the VHM yesterday, the 3rd pitch was the only thing really in right now. The climbing was good, but not great...give it a little time to thicken up. Much care was used, as the exit moves were 20 feet of crappy hollow ice.

Is Kelly Turner your instructor? If so, get ready for 10 days of hemotomias, homework and homeopathics!

I snowboarded on Villarica in '94...pretty sick stuff. The crater gives off a rosy glow in the right set of cloud conditions. We skied above the resort, filming a ski and snowboard movie. The resort gave us free tickets and a guide. A "groupie" refused to listen to local beta and ingored warnings, then promptly fell off a 30 foot cliff to flat ice. ( first aid tip: a snowboard makes for a exellent back board, just remove the bindings.) The movie, shot in 16mm film, was never released.

The latest cold front should bring the goods.... NOAA weather forcast for the Spring Mtns. The traveling multiclimber might want to bring the tools, crampons, lucky charm and no expectations.

The first pitch aids well for the unethical types. My partner is still grumpy about my batmaning the bolts...

The Town Crier thread made me remember a dream project that has haunted me for 3 years. On the way down from Centerfold ,I scoped the amazing arete to the right of The Dihedral Route. There looked to be enough features to allow a really strong climber to prehaps climb the most impressive unclimbed feature in Index. As this is amazing line has been negelected and I live 1200 miles away with a full plate of projects...a challenge for the brave. I propose the name The Great Cascadian Knife There. I said it.

Freeing Town Crier would be the biggest thing to happen at Index in years... Go for it!!

I say edit the thing down to 6 minutes and scrap all those "happy bunny" turns.

One angle is to let unwitting friends decide. Send some brave volunteers up your climbs and listen to the cries. ..mild wimpering is good. Terrified cursing is bad. Another thought is: Why go through a LOT of time and energy on your part if the bolt was not put in a spot that might not protect the leader. Deciding where permanent pro goes is not as easy as some think. I have been on both sides of the fence on this one...it's not easy to balance the creative and the possibly dangerous.

The PNW needs to realize that there are more strong women in other parts of the country... the "male trad superiority complex" that plagues Washington is lame. There are at least 3 women in my circle that have climbed 5.13...they are more disiplined than anybody! Photo of Roxy courtsey of TYB photography

"Exploration Northwest" hosted by Don McCune was an northwest classic!! They were always doing cool stuff...the bigfoot episode was vintage PNW!
