  3. Hiding from the oh-so very miserable weather that plauges sin city every summer, I return to my only inside hobby... building 1/48 scale model aircraft. I admit it, a total geek pursuit. Things were not supposed to turn out this way, I usually carefully maintain my devil-may-care, extreme manboy pursuits: cliff crawling, multigear hill biking, trolling storm tossed waters for stripers, rush hour commuting... ect. Wandering through the local craft store with Mrs. G, I stumbled across the model section. My eyes feasted on snazzy hot rods, elegant multi masted sailing ships and of course, fearsome military aircraft. The near infinate paint selection made me dizzy with consumer delirum.... this was better than new cams! I beg to be allowed to spend my allowance on a F/A-18... she rolls her eyes and relents to my infallable logic, "it's only $15.00, a cheap hobby that cannot possibly make you a widow" Nearly 20 very small (and not so small) aircraft now patrol the skies of our modest home. Spitfires, Tomcats, Apaches, Zeros, Mitchells, Sabres, Hueys, Phantoms and too many number/ letter jobs to count. Opening a dining room cubbard, my wife asks if I'm going to do something with the sleek (if slightly dusty) F-15C that perches on her good china like a hawkish silver gargoyle... "careful with that" I warn..."it was $15.00" Time to come clean folks... What's your most hidden bastion of childish geekdom?

  11. You should watch it in Mexico, people down here are freaking out over it! Me myself, have never been a sports fan, but have enjoyed the world cup so far. I can hear the bar across the street from my apartment erupt into cheers when a big play happens. By british friend has been very patient, explaining the game and the uber-fierce national rivalries.

  15. You just never get used to those days when you wake up to sleet and snow. We got a few climbs in before the weather crapped out. Animal Cracker Wheat Thin Mrs. G and me retreated 300 miles south on sunday to Mecca, a boulderfield in Nevada and the first place not blowing/ snowing/ raining. Disgruntled and unrested, we drove home and bought an air rifle to make ourselves feel better. I built the shooting bench and she sewed up the sandbags.

  24. Business took me to NYC this week, a day off found me in central park. I wandered around spotting short contrived traverses and straight ups. Finally settling on a line I thought would go in dress shoes, I began a slippery ascent of what I would later find out was cat rock. Several false starts and ungraceful slips finally allowed me to get off the ground long enough to climb a 5 move problem. The rock was good, but very short. My efforts were rewarded by a brief but very intense snow storm. The flakes were freakin' huge, causing a minor panic, as street vendors and unprepared pedistrians scrambled for cover from the snow. Happy, I strolled down 5th avenue, bought lunch at a busy deli and even smoked half a joint walking down a now semi-desterted street. New York is amazing, and well worth the trip.
