  1. After the 2000 debacle, a law was passed allowing people who were registed but missing from the rolls to vote with a provisional ballet, which theoretically would be authenticated and counted. Also, Diebold changed their name. Other than that, not much.
  2. I kind of doubt there was a list. Palin broached the subject with the librarian on a number of occasions--there does not need to be a list for me to have a huge problem with this.
  3. Snopes doesn't disprove anything. Palin asked to have books removed from the library. After the librarian refused, Palin tried to fire her.
  4. Talking out of the side of your neck, as usual....
  5. In either case, knowingly carrying a baby with Down's to term is plain old bad judgement. I won't say it's not your right to make that choice, but it does say a lot about the judgment of the individual--and SP could end up being one heartbeat away from being leader of the free world. If it's her daughter's kid, taking credit for Trig is a bad idea too. It's really not as interesting as some of her other problems though--book banning, the Bridge to Nowhere, Troopergate. There's more than enough incompetence wrapped up in that former beauty queen package.
  6. AP reports Obama wants to double funding to charter schools Argh! I don't mind paying for the education of our nation's children, but I SO don't want my tax dollars going to pay for your kid to go to private school. Particularly if it's the religious kind. I miss when Obama was way further over on the left. BTW scroll all the way to the bottom of the article to see what cheap shots the other guys are up to. What a bunch of hypocrites!
  7. Hey Sare, How come you won't talk to the media or say anything unscripted? --a very concerned citizen
  8. I totally agree: Troopergate Book Banning Drilling ANWR Anti-Abortionist Abstinence Preachers with Teenage Mothers for Daughters Alaska Secessionism 21st Century Christian Crusades The scary thing is, these are the kind of things that usually get Republicans elected! You forgot becoming mayor of Wasilla, town had no debt, six years later after her 2 terms=20+ million in debt, town population at the time around 5000 building a sports arena in Wasilla (pop 5000), cost 15 million dollars, if that's not bad enough, it was built on land the city didn't own supporting the "bridge to nowhere" until she saw it was unpopular, then said "thanks but no thanks"--AK had already received $223 million from Congress for the project--which AK did not return getting pregnant late in her reproductive life, when chances of birth defects are so much higher Yeah, Caribou Barbie for Veep, great idea.
  9. The couscous is best enhanced by freshly caught and cooked trout, but that's a discussion for anotehr website....
  10. nuun 3 in 1 asian instant coffee packets instant mashed spuds (Idahoan brand pleeze) Landsjaeger (!!) pilot bread Trader Joe Bananas Flattened hot Jello couscous with salt-cured olives, sundried tomatoes, and dried shallots and preserved lemon (+ an optional protein) curried rice with reconstituted dried veg, dried coconut milk olive oil and various other condiments from the great website minimus.biz
  11. I don't know. I looked over the Pratt proposal and was underwhelmed. History will back up the inevitability of quality stands that are not protected getting cut down. I think it IS inevitable w/o protection. Everyone who spoke up got exceptions and boundary adjustments. Did the MTB people speak up for a certain area and get shot down? That would surprise me. I think that is done by local land managers when they feel the need arises. I personally have no problem with limiting access to allow areas to rehab or not get beat to crap. Yeah, that gets done all the time. Think of the many examples already extant in WA. I'm not sure if they "normally" do, but places previously logged are drawn into Wilderness areas, yes, sure it happens. That's a whole 'nother discussion. The bill was to create the WSW, and it was passed overwhelmingly by House and Senate, and signed into law by a president who's not too famous for being a tree-hugger.
  12. The only concrete threat was that this is about the last unprotected OG that's on public land in WA. Also, the mature second growth is quite large. $$$$$$ I do know the DNR has been logging in some areas either just inside or outside of the new boundaries (sorry do not know which, but have seen it) and I do know that it was simply a matter of time before the OG and mature SG would be logged. Whether there was a hard date or not, it was imminent. That's why Pombo and some other out of state congressmen were so against it--the timber lobby has people like Pombo looking out for their interests. Anyone familiar with the history of the creation of the Alpine Lakes Wilderness knows there was active logging going on up the Mountaineers Creek drainage in the Icicle while that legislation was working its way through the process--that's why we have that road up there actually. The arguments about previous logging or human activity don't fly, as the large majority of federally designated Wildernesses have at least some sign of human activity in them, be it from loging, mining, or homesteading. The Act has been interpreted by Congress in this way since its creation.
  13. Triple J outta Australia, WFMU Boston (like KEXP) and KBCS all come to mind. My favorite podcast of something that doesn't run on KUOW is Le Show, hosted my Harry Shearer. Dry as a bone!!!
  14. Yeah I was going to go fly fishing in E Wa with my guy this weekend and we're now at a complete loss as well. The weather just looks heinous everywhere!!!! Need ideas. Have car and outdoor toys, will travel.
  15. I saw several of the events and the DL wasn't talking about religion. Not at a;ll, matter of fact. If parents don't want to have their kids see a guy give a talk on compassion and peace, they should keep their kids at home. *shrug*
  16. HH the DL is about 30 feet from me right now. Now that the event has started, the Secret Service guys are getting bored. One of the bomb guys is outside giving a demo with one of the pups.
  17. I'm still a little surprised the IOC picked China to host. Go protestors! Free Tibet!
  18. So Mr. Clyde, great info on a domestic situation. That and the above is really promising. Chest compressions are easy as hell, even if the ick factor is not so bad.... In the backcountry, is there really anything we can do except make our climbing partner feel comfortable in a similar situation?

    REI

The new REI brand spring line has a diaper bag in it. The last piece of gear I bought was at Second Ascent. Something as simple as a ti cookpot, in a size REI doesn't bother carrying. It was less expensive (new) than a smaller similar cookpot sold at REI.
