That's an interesting question. Apparently the survey is random, and would therefor include mostly retail employees by the numbers. I'd like to see the % of FT employees at Retail and I'd like to see a comparison of turnover % versus other retailers.

Mexico was big right after NAFTA, but labor has gotten too expensive. Same thing keeps happening. It's referred to the "race to the bottom".

I'm sure the "well-paid" REI retail employees who frequent this site would have something to say about this!

Funny thing is, one of the owners of this board told me that when cc.com was just a twinkle in the eye, they liked the wta site so much for its features (extensive databse, discussion board, links, etc) that they wanted to do something similar for the climbing community. Hence was born cc.com. When wta shut down their board a couple of years ago, some folks who had been involved with it started nwhikers.net. If you don't like hiking, don't hike.

I hate to side with the Evil Empire here, but I think this characterization of the conditions at HQ vastly exaggerates the truth. Just because the retail employees are underpaid does NOT mean all of the employees at HQ are flying around in Lear Jets. For one thing, they have the exact same shitty HMO medical insurance that I do.

Stef, I'd suggest you just read the book. The author knows what he is talking about. I am familar with what my SO does to get the good made for the Evil Empire. We talk a lot about it. This, however, is not the place to discuss that. Perhaps over dinner next Tuesday if the offer still stands! It appears that "In Sam We Trust" is no longer in print. given that it was a very popular book, I'm surprised to see it out of print. I'd suggest the county library system, I'm sure they have a few copies of it.

One of the practices that WalMart has used over and over is mislabeling goods as "made in the USA". It is unethical and illegal. Is that the kind of thing that makes a company a leader in business?
