  1. Funny thing is, one of the owners of this board told me that when cc.com was just a twinkle in the eye, they liked the wta site so much for its features (extensive databse, discussion board, links, etc) that they wanted to do something similar for the climbing community. Hence was born cc.com. When wta shut down their board a couple of years ago, some folks who had been involved with it started nwhikers.net. If you don't like hiking, don't hike.
  2. Um, organizing is illegal in most of the countries in question.
  3. I think we at nwhikers.net are all pretty crushed not to have met the high content standards of so many cc.commers.
  4. Well, none of the dozens of people I know who work for Corporate do. Must not be the successful ones.
  5. I hate to side with the Evil Empire here, but I think this characterization of the conditions at HQ vastly exaggerates the truth. Just because the retail employees are underpaid does NOT mean all of the employees at HQ are flying around in Lear Jets. For one thing, they have the exact same shitty HMO medical insurance that I do.
  6. Stef, I'd suggest you just read the book. The author knows what he is talking about. I am familar with what my SO does to get the good made for the Evil Empire. We talk a lot about it. This, however, is not the place to discuss that. Perhaps over dinner next Tuesday if the offer still stands! It appears that "In Sam We Trust" is no longer in print. given that it was a very popular book, I'm surprised to see it out of print. I'd suggest the county library system, I'm sure they have a few copies of it.
  7. One of the practices that WalMart has used over and over is mislabeling goods as "made in the USA". It is unethical and illegal. Is that the kind of thing that makes a company a leader in business?
  8. sorry
  9. Thursday and Friday are looking very very good.
  10. I encourage all of you Wal-mart lovers to read In Sam We Trust and then tell me if you still thing Wal-mart's business practices are ethical. REI's recently documented business practices veritably pale in comparison.
  11. This is your golden opportunity, retail employees: UNIONIZE!

Girl you gotta stick in there a little longer than three minutes! I'm in there now if you can get back in.
  15. Don't you mean to say unethical enough?
  16. Once again, playing Devil's Advocate here, do you also object to the double taxation of paying NP fees and other fees to federal attractions? I hate the way the parking pass deal is set up as much as the next person, but trailhead and trail maintenance does cost a boodle of $$. If you use the woods a lot, like most of the people here, I'm sure you are more than getting your money's worth in terms of gravel in the parking lots, privy maintenance, trail maintenance, what have you.
  17. It was real nice in the Methow. Cccc-ccc-cold, but clear and beautiful.
  18. Not distinguishing between TH and non-TH thefts here, but I have never heard of a theft of a car stereo that had its faceplate removed. Replacement faceplates generally cost about the same as the entire stereo, and pro thieves know this. The guys who recently got mine downtown were so thorough they stole the owner's manual too.
  19. "•At a National Recreation Area, one famous outhouse cost $333,000. It has a gabled slate roof, cottage-style porches, and a tapered cobblestone masonry foundation in the fashion of Frank Lloyd Wright. But the doors are locked in the winter because this self-composting toilet won’t work in Pennsylvania’s freezing temperatures. And don’t expect any running water; there is none (Salt Lake Tribune, October 8, 1997). • In 1997 in Yosemite National Park the average cost of new employee housing was $580,000 per unit—two to four times the average rate for local housing. The new deluxe housing accommodates fewer than 60 of the park’s 5,000 employees; many still dwell in tent-cabins without running water. Many more examples of how the gov't mismanages your money can be found. Even though our National Parks are raking in cash from visitors the gov't seems to be coming up short on cash. Yosemite National Park is restricting park entry on the busiest days. Since 1993, the park entrance has been closed several times each year due to gridlock in the valley. How much is each person paying to get in??? The Grand Canyon has become so congested that a public transportation system is planned. On an average summer day, 6,500 cars show up at the South Rim, but there are only 2,400 parking spaces. More fees to park more cars? Why not charge the users of these popular tourist traps. " Not to play Devil's Advocate or anything, but does this take into account the fact that the NPS builds stuff to last nearly forever, and with little or no maintenance? These costs seem extraordinary to me too, but not knowing what it takes to build things to last this way, it could be reasonable...? Also if you don't want to see high quality structures in the NPs, maybe you should push for them to go to poor quality ugly structures. The NP architecture is unique, so much so that book have been written about it, but hey, it's your money! And JJA... I bet you could get out of that ticket by taking 15 minutes to write a letter explaining circumstances and enclosing a copy of your pass...

  21. Actually I had a pass .. left it in the glove box, smart huh? Aren't you even going to try to tell the truth and get out of paying the fine?
  22. Spectacle's a great suggestion. It's 9 miles via Pete, and I'm going to say 7 via Mineral Ck and Park Lakes. From there you can head up any number of peaks and/or cruise up to Glacier and or Chikamin Lakes. Nice country, and if there's a speck of snow I don't think the crowds will be insane. A lot of hikers are a-skeert of snow!
  23. Yes, it's all part of the rich fabric that is life.....
  24. No, I think it's kind of odd, just like the time you said we just invaded Syria. We hadn't, and it was neither newsworthy nor funny.
