  1. Last August that creek on the heather benches was barely wet. Had to move roccks to get a pool deep enough to fill water bottles. Descend (or ascending on the way back) the col carefully. It is unstable glacier debris (fine sand, gravel and big blocks). Don't down climb directly above anyone else that you don't want to flatten. Lots of water once you get over the col, stay high while traversing to the Terror glacier. You don't want to loose any more altitude than necessary. Enjoy the slabs below the glacier. I don't remember any crevasses below McMillan. We didn't rope up. The gully getting off of the glacier was pretty chossy.
  2. I thought the obvious fuels for the psyche are "sex and drugs and rock n' roll". Now that line probably dates me.

  4. Shit happens all the time. Not to be flippant in a sad time. (RIP to all friends of wild places and wild mountains) It is always a crap shoot when you are in the mountains. We choose to go into a hazardous environment and sometimes things don't go our way. I've almost been taken out several times by rockfall. I have friends who haven't survived their good times in the mountains. It has really made me think about why I go and what I do in the mountains. But like many of you, I can't explain it but I have to do it, I just hope I make it out alive each time I go.
  5. No, they wouldn't have said even that much. Glad someone finally outed the puppetmaster.
  6. Dru Dude you missed the , must not be smoking the gubment weed, you into the BC bud again?
  7. Ryland That is a male great frigatebird, a masked booby, a red-footed (not red-handed) booby and two laysan albatrosses. I think TomTom has me beat if he took that shot.
  8. Wow the white neck collar is much more pronounced then I've seen before in captive birds.
  9. Just realized I owed you some photos of boobies. I threw in some goonies too.
  10. That reminds me I owe Minx photos of boobies. Here you go boobies and goonies.
  11. Do eagles migrate? I kind of want to be an animal that migrates. I like to travel. Yes, the American Bald Eagle migrates. At least, I see them from time to time in the Little Naches drainage and around Bumping Lake, then they're gone for a year, then they're back. For any additional information on the migratory patterns of wild flying fauna, PM Ducknut or contact these guys. Seriously, this link has some Bald Eagle info, and leads to this link about migration. So there you have it. <edited to add serious info/links> Peregrine Falcon. The get to hang around cliffs and they eat ducks. Best of both worlds. Now for the professional Q&A. Ducks don't mate for life. Some barely mate for more than . Most of the stories of mating for life are stories expressing human qualities on animals. Eagle migrate. Its relatively common for juvenile eagles to fly hundreds or even a thousand miles just wandering around.
  12. The South Slog isn't technical. You may need crampons but the boot track is usually ok without them. Depends on your level of comfort looking at a 2000 foot runout. On descent, you will be plunge stepping down this slope with the full view. Crampons will probably just ball up if its warm and make it more dangerous. I'd take an axe just so you can use it on the glissade not to mention the self arrest capabilities it gives you. If you want the simplest Cascade climb, go hike up South Sister. Nothing but a long walk and lts of dust.

  14. Wow, are those eurasian cranes or white-naped? Can't quite distinguish from the photo and I haven't ever seen either.
  15. I would think that the mining and transportation costs of manufacturing new bottles would be higher than recycling old. Also although I don't know how to quantify the costs, it seems that there are costs due to loss of land due to mining and waste disposal. After all the materials don't just appear at the factory door and disappear when we throw them in the trash.
  16. Anyone have any recent beta. This variation isn't sounding like too much fun.

  19. I tell you these are bomber, light-weight, strong and free. Even dirt bag climbers can afford them to anchor their Biblers.
  20. see if I post any more comments about jackbooted thugs and black helicopters from my government computer while on the job. Hmmmm, does the Patriot Act cover seizure of cc.com backup tapes?
  21. It was the funniest book I have ever read. It was one of the stupidest books about being outdoors I have read, although it was funny. I was surprised that Bryson or his brother in law lasted 1 day.

I'll have to post up some pictures that I have taken of boobies.
  23. I am old school, and old (47). But I have never figured this shit out. Do guys who verbally harass women think they are making headway by saying "hey baby, nice [/8=D]inapporpriate sexual reference[/8=D]?
