i'm with iaxx on this. i realize this doesn't apply to US citizens. it feels as though it's the start of a bad precedent.

i think the searchers deserve major kudos for getting out there. it's got to be emotionally draining after a couple days not finding the guy. good job to the helicopter teams who spotted the tracks and the team leader for keeping it going an extra day or two. thumbs up to this dude too. even though he got himself in trouble, he obviously had enough brains and knowledge to keep himself alive for 4 days in frigid weather. happy new years to this guy and his family!

you can't really park too much of anywhere besides the alpental parking lots on that side of the freeway. as for the no dogs/no sledding signs, i don't see what your problem is. i've almost hit morons sledding and sliding right into the road in front of me. they clog the road and make it almost impossible to get through there. the dogs are a problem b/c they tend to dart in front of cars. there is a leash rule in the neighborhoods there. there's usually plenty of parking at alpental. the access question is related to the upper lot. park in the lower lot.

i think the parking lot is on FS land which is LEASED by the ski area. i believe this lease gives them final say so over the use of that lot.

i did my senior research on BSE. it was quite interesting and based on what i learned that year if i still ate beef this lone case would do nothing to change my interest in eating beef. there are plenty of other good reasons not to eat mass produced beef. Try organic or free range beef.

thanks for the good info. that's very disturbing that they're closing the parking area to no ski area users. i had also heard that they are considering charging a $10 parking fee in the main parking lot starting next year. i sincerely hope an alternative is found. i know many people park year round at the lower summit west parking area in order to access commonwealth basin.

what are you talking about? the condo owners etc haven't done anything new in a while re: parking. the parking lots haven't been affected at all. During the winter the parking on the road is restricted to allow for decent snow removal. i'm worried about access to the valley but imagine there will still be parking available somewhere in the area.

by what measure? Percentage of "major purchase" sales are up. My investment banker friend is seeing a lot more movement. Indicators like that. Fewer unemployment claims. You know, the standard stuff. yeah and this would explain the increase in hunger and homelessness? perhaps unemployment claims are down b/c people have been unemployed long enough to use up all their benefits? is disposable income going up? are people going into greater debt to make these major purchases?
