  1. I agree. As far as the blathering of this jackoff that Kevbone linked goes, I didn't make it past this: Bullshit, that's not freedom. Candidate Obama may have spewed a lot of things which President Obama he doesn't follow and extra wars is one more thing we don't need right now. Candidate Obama express the need to get our budget balanced, and President Obama is causing to to go ballistic into the strategist. It's a horrible thing that will cause all kinds of big issues d0own the road. I'd be fine if they bumped the taxes for everyone in a fair way AND AT THE SAME TIME brought the incredible amounts of spending back under some semblance of control. Of course the typical yammering about big corporations not paying any money, but no examples and specifics. Don't address the huge issue in the room which is the government spending like an out of control drunken sailor. Of course it CANNOT continue, and what that means is that you, joe average, eventually gets to foot the bill of what appears to be near unlimited wasteful government spending which we will borrow to spend. Trust me on this, it won't be the big corp. on who's back this heavy burden will be placed - it will be yours. You can pay it back sometime in the future, don't worry. Hey, it won't even be you, we'll make your kids pay it. The oppressive's want to kill the Goose that lays the golden eggs and are thinking that maybe they'll get rich in the process. Uhhh, that's not the way the real world works outside of the government mindset in the real world and it's not going to happen that way. We need to do it now, not later. Less spending, now.
  2. LOL! Thats' funny stuff. Glad the pup made it out. Good on your folks for doing the work! My neighbor has one of these beautiful Bernise Mt dogs as a pet. He paid $1600 for the thing. It's one of the nicest dogs and does so well around his children. To me, if your dog will chase wildlife, especially game animals and especially in the off season in the winter: it should be on a leash. I use to have a dog that was that way and it was a pain in the ass at times. Exceptions are dogs that will kill a small furry rodent in your campground before it chews through your tent or backpack but leaves everything else alone-then that's just the circle of life at work:-) we had these 2 mutts leashed for this encounter with the goats in the lower pic (didn't get the dogs and the goats in the same frame for obvious reasons). Until it became clear that the dogs were warily avoiding them and leaving them alone. In the top pic, as I'd been earlier stalked by a cougar in that location, I figured unleashed was the way to go and it was all fun and games till the skinny one there dove under the boulders after a rodent. The dog got way underground someplace till it apparently got trapped. 20-30 min of underground yowling followed till he finally figured out how to back out. They don't chase deer, elk or goats (they have never encountered a cougar or bear), but small furry things make them go all primal and create it's own set of issues....sigh.
  3. CC.com bitchfest parking pass thread Glad you're back! Woot! When do we see a Yosemite TR to amp the stoke up a notch?
  4. Stupid? There's 2 of these rope jumps on El Cap:-) I know I know, if your mother asked you "would you jump off a bridge if your friends did too"? Well, lets just say that I know the answer to that now:-) Personally, I just hope my kids aren't as stupid as me. To answer the anchor question, there is a place for a natural thread, and a single bolt was added @10 years ago, they may have been feet from it. However, if what occurred is what I think, they were on level ground with their packs where the climb starts ...on a hillside, and would not have expected to have fallen from there and would be tossing their harnesses into their packs for the hike down soon. The hike backs away from the rock and gets into the parks trail system, while directly downslope, feet from the base, is a small 15' cliff. You can see the trail just below on the hillside in the pic below, this is my kid we were out there a couple weeks back. The people down there are either on the trail (left) or starting the Pioneer route (right). Directly out of sight under my son is a short cliff. You can sort of see the hillside dropping away to the left Drederek. You can ask the rangers, but the stupid crap they routinely have to deal with, usually from hikers and tourists, is pretty lengthy. It's a popular park with lots of people all the time, and it generally works out good for everyone with a few exceptions here and there. Regardless, that really sucks for the fallen climber, wish her well and a fast recovery.
  5. It sounds like 2 folks had rappelled, most likely one was still heading down and either on the rope or about to disconnect but on the ground, the other climber was unroped and at the base of the Pioneer rap waiting, when someone launched on the rope jump. The jumper hit the rap line which swung the whole kabob towards the downhill side but pushed off the unattached climber, who fell over that little drop at the start of pioneer and then rolled down the hill. The news people could screw up a wet dream, but if you watch this at 2:20 or so in and imagine another party just getting to the ground on rap, you'll see what I mean. [video:youtube]
  6. Opps, late night thread. I mistakenly came in here looking for the morning coffee thread. Nevermind dudes!

  11. LOL _____________________________________________ "Letter to Senator Patty Murray, Chair Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee Senator Patty Murray, Chair Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee Dear Senator Murray: For many months now, your colleagues in the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee leadership have engaged in a series of disparagements and ad hominem attacks about us, apparently as part of a concerted political and fundraising strategy. Just recently, Senator Reid wrote in a DSCC fundraising letter that Republicans are trying to “force through their extreme agenda faster than you can say ‘Koch Brothers.’” So you can imagine my chagrin when I got a letter from you on June 17 asking us to make five-figure contributions to the DSCC. You followed that up with a voicemail* indicating that, if we contributed heavily enough, we would garner an invitation to join you and other Democratic leaders at a retreat in Kiawah Island this September. I’m hoping you can help me understand the intent of your request because it’s hard not to conclude that DSCC politics have become so cynical that you actually expect people whom you routinely denounce to give DSCC money. It is troubling that private citizens taking part in the discourse have become the targets of White House and DSCC fundraising missives, and we would certainly encourage you to rethink that approach. Ultimately, I expect voters will see through that and will weigh the issues on the merits alone. But in the meantime, if you could provide me some insight on what exactly you are asking of us and why, I would be most grateful. Sincerely, Philip Ellender President, Government & Public Affairs Koch Companies Public Sector, LLC ." __________________________________________________________ I guess it's true that ya got to drill where there's oil.

    Just sayin'

Hahaha! Sucks to be YOU! Bunch of us have that in our rear-view mirrors so far BACK that we don't even have to think about it! WOOT! Hahaha! Would a "happy birthday" be appropriate now or would it be just another kick in the crotch?....hmmm. Well, take care in either case Peter. We all end up back in the dirt anyway sooner or later, you've outlived enough so far to have something to be happy over.
  13. Arrrrrgggghhh! No chalk ye Lubbers! (cough * tillitgetshard * COUGH)
  14. I got a spot up there that I'll show you which will blow your dress up for bouldering. Touch base when you see me up there and we'll compare notes as you might already be aware of the spot as it's not a secret. No Chalk on it please, just bring your shoes. BTW, the 5.7 thing means nothing as long as the technical skillz (belays, knots, rigging, etc) are topnotch IMO. But I'm slow to warm up to folks so I won't be tiring in. Anyway, I'm the short, unattractive old out of shape guy usually dressed in dark slacks and brown Ralph Lauren Polo loafers. My name is Bill, as the avatar says - that's not a pic of me over there though. Say hi up there. I look more like this, cut my hair recently but no longer have the beard. Lower photo looks more like me, thats Plaidman on the right. That's all I have for recent photos non of the old ones look like me any more.
  15. The county sheriff apologies for thinking on the same wavelength. http://www.mercurynews.com/news/ci_18439773 "Skamania sheriff backs off drug claim in death The Associated Press Posted: 07/08/2011 08:43:58 AM PDT STEVENSON, Wash.—The Skamania County sheriff's office says 28-year-old Amber Kellar of Weed, Calif., apparently died of medical issues at the Rainbow Family gathering in Gifford Pinchot National Forest. The Columbian reports her family informed investigators she had a heart condition. Sheriff Dave Brown said he spoke prematurely earlier when he said the death Wednesday appeared to be from a drug overdose. About 20,000 peace activists and spiritual seekers attended this week's annual Rainbow Family gathering in southwest Washington. "
  16. hoping that all come back safe.

  18. I'd say that the public, and the politicians shouldn't get to vote on this. Let the experts define what our countries strategic needs are based on an estimated budget to make our country secure and then execute that plan. Realistically, we need to spend on space based weapons and drop the carrier. China already has cheap assed missiles that it is said can and will sink a carrier. Those assholes have sold it to Iran it's been said, and Iran has hardened sites in the Persian gulf to hit our ships with this Chinese missile. Congress exasperatedly publicly berated the pentagon for not developing a defense to this bullshit. We have enough carriers already. Develop a defense for the supersonic shore to ship missiles. Pull back from the bullshit we are wasting $ on, like being in Afghanistan. Support those in Afghanistan who support us (formerly the Northern Front, General Dostrum and his tribe). Pocket the difference, but fully fund the VA and space based weapons. But it's not my call, nor the public's call, to make. Leave it to the experts who live and breath this issue.
  19. No doubt Scott. Everyone here, even those who think we are crazy to run off and fight non-essential wars for non-strategic reasons, wish you: all of you guys, well. I'd like to see you all back here safe and sound, raising familys and spending those military paychecks in the US. I think that you need to rethink your entire shtick buddy, {especially the "trained killer part as military personal tend to be as law abiding as they come) but to discuss only 2 of your points. 1st) price out a single JDAM (the best low cost way to kill the enemy) let alone a Cruise Missile. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Northrop_Grumman_B-2_Spirit If we can get out of tossing million dollar bombs out of airplanes alone in the 3 or 4 major active locations we are in now, we'd save a fortune. Running these sorties even with the lowest cost ordinance is very costly. No need to reduce the amount of military personal we have, rotate them home and let them be peacetime soldiers in US based locations: station them in places named Fort Lewis, Fort Sill, Fort Benning, Fort Ord or whatever. We'd retain their skill sets in case of a serious future need, and they and their family's would be spending those paychecks in the US. The operational costs to run F18's or B-2s on repetitive missions would drop radically, as would fleet costs to have aircraft carriers stationed out of these shitholes. Aircraft carriers have 4,000 sailors on them, and the price of fuel to run one within jet range to bomb a country like Libya alone is enough to fund most small 3rd world countries. Our military operational costs are huge to achieve these minor questionable goals. 2nd) on the increasing taxes issue you note. Let the Obama (formerly Bush) tax cuts for the wealthy expire. Why should we be borrowing and paying interest on that money from the Chinese to allow the rich to bank more money? They aren't creating more jobs as much as deepening their portfolios while the middle class gets stuck with having to repay the borrowed $ sometime in the future. Pulling money out of the hands of the many so that it can get locked into the bank vaults of the few has always been a recipe for disaster in this country. We've seen it occur in history, why do it again voluntarily? We need to balance our budget badly. Reducing costs is critical, but as we do not seem to have the political will to easily do so those 2 methods noted above would be an easy start. Start that out of box thinking revision with those 2 issues and see what ya think. Interesting here's the army just flushed $3 billion down the toilet. http://www.extremetech.com/extreme/89048-us-army-spent-2-7-billion-on-a-battlefield-computer-that-doesnt-work
  20. Woof http://www.dogthebountyhunter.com/
  21. Of course. And I should know better to mix history into a joke attempt. My oblique reference to the year the Civil War ended crashed like an Iron Warship into the bay. Won't try that one again:-)
  22. BTW, I use to make my own gorp that was so tasty. Cashews, M and Ms and a few raisins. One time, my brother and I went up to climb Rainier in the winter figured we'd plan on about a week as the weather looked marginal and the snow super deep. So I made up a big batch of this stuff figuring that it's nice to treat yourself when you're suffering and there is no way we wouldn't burn through all those calories. Early on there was one of those 3 feet of snow days, but what we both noticed as we waited out the storm in the tent and went through almost a weeks worth of this cashew/sugar/raisin crap while lounging in the tent over gorging, is that it made us both very lethargic and neither of us wanted to climb afterwards. So we bailed. Thus is knowledge slowly gained:-)
  23. Hurmp, I thought it tasted kind of strange, but what the hell, low calories things usually taste something like that....Thanks Gene, thought it was a low cal high fiber diet thing. Thanks for the recommendation John. ..anyone have any good methods for cleaning black printers ink off the tongue?
