    Damn

I'm torn, as I bet most of you are too. She was certainly an amazing talent.
  2. It most likely was turned in over there. I'd call the Rangers and check. Good luck
  3. Doesn't matter what Drew says, I'm not clicking on his link. This is why.
  4. Grace might have looked better 40 years ago, but here's a guy that's timeless and never changes.
  5. They just have a real low volume of production, are a pain in the ass to produce, ask JH on that he's writing a book:-) You can touch it anytime....LOL, it's a buck per touch. Kidding, with your stewardship of the D5 project, of course you can touch and fondle to your hearts content no charge; hmm, why does that sound wrong? You have loaner rights anytime you want. In fact, bolting a few routes will help your soul out. Couple of saga links: The D5 Saga The D5 saga middle
  6. To go along with the other chart for Hugh
  7. Hugh, this one's for U babe. Hope it helps:-) You're welcome. _________________________________________________________ Lets add airplanes to this list:
  8. Hugh Jardon wants a chart.
  9. Pretty fair and balanced short version here if anyone wants a good read on the general subject. http://original.antiwar.com/carl-conetta/2010/03/03/the-pentagons-runaway-budget/ Hope and change:-)
  10. We don't have any unmanned planes with aeronautic specs close to these I believe. We might be further ahead spending that money on space based weapons and figuring out how we could shoot down everyone else's planes from orbital satellites. The X-47 is an interesting project: however, even a lay person would wonder how easy it would be to simply break the communication link (like a cell phone or radar jammer) so that the metal drops out of the sky like so many rocks. Or better yet, hack the signal and hijack/steal the plane. Regardless: the military will and should take a $ hit. Talking about the Barney Frank plan to cut the military I'd have to agree with Admiral Mullen (last paragraph): "House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan, Wisconsin Republican, released a detailed budget plan that calls for modest defense drawdowns over five years. He argued that the Defense Department’s total budget share already has decreased from 25 percent to 20 percent. A smattering of conservatives are advocating more shrinkage. Some Republicans on Mr. Obama’s deficit commission supported cuts above $400 million. With all troops due to be pulled out of Iraq this year and Afghanistan by 2014, the Pentagon could save $100 billion annually on those two accounts alone. Mr. Gates instituted more than $100 billion in savings, although some of that money was redirected into other arms programs. The next phase is likely to be revealed in Mr. Obama’s fiscal 2013 budget in February or in some grand deficit-reduction agreement between him and Congress. Adm. Mike Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said this year: “We can’t hold ourselves exempt from the belt-tightening. Neither can we allow ourselves to contribute to the very debt that puts our long-term security at risk.”" This is a process that generally is pretty good, although lots of people will bitch on it. By the end of the day, if there are enough patriots who hold to their beliefs and don't sell out to the military industrial complex/big money that follows these massive programs, we will all benefit. Take care all:
  11. LOL I heard Governor Christie speak on something like Face the Nation once. Very intelligent and well spoken (much like president Obama), had the right stuff as far as I could see. Yet it seems that someone who can talk and be a fiscal conservative still seems to be concerned with the moral views, as it relates to their religious views, of everyone else in society. That basically makes the person unvotable in my world view. I only heard him discussing fiscal policy and he was nailing the high points IMO. A CC.com poster: The infrastructure to support our overseas military interventions seems to survive the President, no matter what political party or even specific viewpoint expressed before the election. You think Christie is any different? Anyone need or want us to go back and cherry pick Candidate Obamas quotes pre-election regarding this issue? When "change" was discussed, most of us were not thinking it would be a "change" of opinion after the election:-)
  12. First, let me preface my statement by saying that I don't feel our worldwide military posture and continued excessive belligerence is something I agree with. We were too isolationist before WW2, and this is the outcome of the failure to get the job done until it got brought to us too late, and the resulting price we, and the world, paid. However, if we are to be the ones dictating, and not the ones being dictated too, that is, if a strong military is something to be desired in this day and age: then we need to continue to modernize, and not rest on our laurels. These planes will be replacing the more numerous F-16s and F-18 hornets. There are shitloads more of them than there will be of this plane and they will wear out. Metal fatigue and hours in the air do matter with planes, especially the higher performance ones: unlike with say, your car. Hopeful the shorter range, coupled with Chinese shore to ship supersonic missiles that makes our carriers back off a bit for safety reasons, will mean that we will take a more defensive posture in the world going forward. I believe that a less threatening posture would actually be safer, but I don't plan for a living. Regardless, this plane is the next gen, and the Pentagon planners insist that we need it. For myself, I'd rather we be the hammer than the anvil. Be the ones who dictate, rather be dictated too. I'd rather see our Air Force rule the sky's rather than see our troops massacred on the ground. That's me, argue all you want, you pay some experts a shitload of scratch to wargame this stuff and plan for all extengincies. They did, and this is the result. People like Pat (Trashcanarnuba who started the thread) don't have to worry about the security of this country from external threats and our global posture 5 years from now while they do. Pat seems to love government spending and an expanded federal government presence for non-critical things until it gets to something like this, defense being a true federal government function as chartered by the constitution and where it really matters to our very lives, freedom and liberty. Bunch of backseat drivers won't make the car go off the road, although it can be hard on the ears on occasion LOL. Take care all.
  13. Cool. CU next time. I heard on the radio that tonight is the Yashnee memorial up on the Butte someplace. Ujahn called me and said it's too wet up there to climb, so anyone heading up check it out. Of particular note from last Thursdays clean up was seeing Gary Rall himself, owner of The Portland Rock Gym, show up with some hardcore looking climbers and all head over to the schwingus to do some actual work and clear off all the Ivy and the crap. I knew it was Gary cause he had some free tickets to his climbing gym. I snatched one before he gave them to Amber to distribute. Sooooo, free gym passes, in fact, I should have my weak ass over there right now as it's dry and nice inside of The Portland Rock Gym unlike wet Rocky Butte LOL! I was in there once and some young kid was campusing laps like there was no tomorrow. When I went over and looked at the size of the strips, and realized that I'd be happy to hang there for 2 seconds or more without pulling a finger tendon, I got depressed. pfft, kids. We need to support those who support us, and cleaning up the trash at the local climbing place is above and beyond and worthy of support IMO. Thanks all!!!!
  14. Gizmondo reports today that the first one (finally) rolled off the the line and flew to it's new Florida home where pilots will soon be training on it in preparation for the production planes to follow. http://gizmodo.com/5822551/the-first-f+35-arrives-to-its-new-home/gallery/ They say nothing in the world can touch it (except for the F-22). That alone should guarantee that Pat can flap his lips and complain for the next 5 years in freedumb and not under another powers repressive thumb.
  15. You need more proof than this?

    Fat Profits.

Good lord. This kind of publicity should help fatten up her bank account too. Is a "binge and purge" site far behind?
  17. Prole is saying that we need a Reagan style trickle down theory style theory revival or we will have a fucked up economy. Don't you read? Right Prole:-) LMAO. In fact, think of China Murray. They use to totally be 100 percent devoted to pulling up the bottom of society and forcing everyone else to pay to support social programs for them. The net result was that everyone remained poor. Only AFTER they have started to go all progressive republican style and get the trickle down going have they truly been able to start to help the poor. So - get rich (first) help poor. That way, not reverse. Can't help the poor if you are going broke. That's what Prole is suggesting here. Thanks Prole!
  18. What a remarkable link Prole. Thank you so much. I suspect that a lot of that could be successfully argued against, but very prescient. The downside of betting against interest rates staying low and stocks staying strong is that you feel bad when making $ on days like today when the economy hits the doldrums. Dow falls 150 points and T-bill rates rise.
  19. Hi Mark: sent via PM (Private Message), there will be a clinking thing up on the header bar, just click it and it's a "PM" with the info. Good to see you on site. ..any climbing pics? _____________________________________________________ Have a good trip Denali Dave!
  20. Pay up. Darnit - only a buck too, wish you'd put more on the bet. His primary motivation was clearly not self-gratification. Well now this is certainly untrue as well for the Smith Rock area. He is. Seriously. Not for all of mankind, that's too much. Just Smith. He might not even be "The Man" over there, but he's certainly on the committee:-) I'd hope that we can all end the internet s&*t storm before it gets going. Of course it raining hard outside so I suspect it will go on for a while regardless. If anyone wants to discuss it, there is has always been a core group of locals there, just bring it up face to face next trip over to Smith. However, spend some time considering all of the angles and possibilities first. Sometimes things look different after a week or 2 reflection. When the Canadian fella died right by us auguring into the dirt on Tale of 2 Shitties in the 80's, my first (emotional) thought (once the wailing and crying of the guys loved ones died down) was to stick a bolt in right there at the traverse. Upon consideration, bad idea. No one has died there since in the 30 or whatever years, bolt was not needed and the climbing challenge is not denigrated. Whereas the Pioneer route may be the most popular aid climb in the state. People come from other states and countries to Smith, and the Monkey on the tick list for a lot of them. It's often super crowded already with Monkey Space and Pioneer getting clustered so the base is crowded right below, plus the rap location where this accident occurred is used for almost all of the Monkey routes from all sides, and it can be crazy crowded without the rope swing. To say nothing of the other prime routes on the East side wall being pretty much off limits to responsible climbers if folks were jumping first. For myself, there are lots of places and bridges to jump off of if I want to go rig them. (I don't, too lazy). Powderhound has one near his house he's been eyeballing, send him a PM. Furthermore, there are other places that would be great swings where you most likely wouldn't see a soul all day. Head up to the Great Roof at Smith, a worthy climb in and of itself that is rarely done, and take a look see if that might be a spot where a swing could be rigged. Possibly Independence Spire (?) too, don't know if I have the name right but its the overhanging rappel one over near Stander Ridge. I came off while toprope soloing at Cathedral right over the reading room cave one day and thought that the unintentional swing would never end. I think it took 3 days to get my nards back down in the lil sack after that although I will admit to promptly climbing right back up to the best spot and intentionally jumping off a couple more times just....because. Kind of scary/ or a thrill to be totally alone, no cell phone reception anywhere, quite a bit of a hike just to get to the car and in a very remote location. The next trip up to my horror I found that the rope I'd been climbing, falling and screwing around on was core shotted up on top just feet below the anchor most likely from the wind and storms over the week causing it to rub on the only sport it was touching (3 feet below the anchor), couldn't see it from the ground with old and bad eyes and it was cliff side in anyway - close up picture below of the rope...OMG!) After seeing the condition of the rope I'd been swinging on multiple times, the nards disappeared back up there and refused to come down till weeks later when I was home hugging my Teddy Bear for comfort. That would be a kick assed spot as well and there are maybe 3 places you could rig it in the general vicinity with no people around for miles. As noted, take extra care where you place the anchors, use big assed bolts and pad where needed, it's ruff rock. http://www.mountainproject.com/v/coethedral/106865073 There is a pretty big cave up on a hill you can see when you park that has no routes where this kind of thing would be Afrigganstounding I'd bet. Regards to all!
  21. Anyone thinking of doing the multi-massively awesome combo platter trip (Rockclimbing, fishing, free hot tubbing in the woods in old growth logs, kayaking/rafting/swimming) and thinking of the perfectly sited Indian Henry C.G. as a base camp needs to reconsider. (it's going to be wet up there Saturday anyway and it's too cold to swim) Closed. indefinitely. Loose trees they say. http://www.oregonlive.com/clackamascounty/index.ssf/2011/07/hazardous_trees_cause_closure.html Remember when the Forest Service not only knew what a chainsaw was, but ran them?
  22. This is what people say...(ie attack the person, not the idea) when they are too stupid to come up with a rational argument and too proud to admit that they themselves are full of shit. LOL
  23. Looks like I might have called it right up there. I hope that this poor little girls family can finally find some peace. http://www.kgw.com/news/local/Search-for-Yashan-125613373.html "Search for Yashanee Vaughn continues Friday by Justin Burto @KGWNews Posted on July 14, 2011 at 9:08 PM Updated today at 9:22 PM PORTLAND -- Police crews will continue their search for the body of Yashanee Vaughn around Rocky Butte on Friday. Portland Police Bureau Lt. Robert King said crews will be doing additional searches for Vaughn, though he couldn't confirm when crews would be there or where exactly they would be searching. King couldn't divulge why crews have decided to continue their search tomorrow, other than to say that it's an on-going homicide investigation. Police crews were seen in the area around Rocky Butte on Thursday evening. A spokesman for Vaughn's family said they were notified of the plans for Friday's search, and they are aren't making any public comment until they talk first with police and the Multnomah Co. District Attorney's Office." What a horrible thing. Damn it all.
  24. I haven't read so much bullshit since I had perused the 1946 Western Stockmans quarterly report on manure disposal. Holy shit.
  25. Nice seeing folks getting on it...seems kind of a light turnout but maybe we can dress that up next go round. A few of us who'd worked our asses off all day (not me as I'm an office turd) snuck out a tad early and did a lap. Showed up smelling strongly of beer of course from all the beer dripping all over my clothes as we climbed up the Emotional Rescue 4th class scramble with holes in the bags.... Nice meeting some new folks too! Keep up the good work. Of interest is that the police had the front road blocked off -100% with police cars sideways with lights on and crime tape behind them. Everyone was turned back and made to go down the other way. That's damned unusual, hopefully they finally found Yashanee Vaughn's body up there. Chad and I saw some obvious unusual and suspicious drag marks in the dirt at the top of Toothpick and we both were like "oh oh"......"nah", and went back to picking up garbage. Here's the story if anyone is interested. http://www.kgw.com/news/local/Family-hopes-to-ramp-up-efforts-to-find-Yashanee-Vaughn--124165949.html The young man in the photo has been officially charged with murder based on the fact that she was seen getting in his car about a mile away from where we were picking up the gargbage tonight and primarily her blood was splattered all over his bedroom, but they don't have her body to this day. He obviously murdered her, but where is she? The boy isn't saying and the family is left twisting in the wind. So in case anyone noticed the orange tags all over up there on all the trees and bushes, those were left from the search for the young girls body a bit ago on Rocky Butte when they had the whole place closed down and this dominated front page on the news for a few weeks. Both the alleged dickhead in the pic above and the young girl lived a few blocks away from the base of the butte. I hope that they find this little girl so that the family can finally have some peace. As a parent I can relate to just how damn heartbreaking this must be for her loved ones. Damn sad. Thanks again!
