Bushes approval rating is 14% and even his supporters see stuff like this oil thing/Afganistan-Iraq invasion, the lies they got caught in to give them permission to attack (remember Colin Powell, Ambassador to Niger Wilson saying that the yellow cake was a make believe document and the administration then outing of his wife Valerie Palame as a CIA agent in retaliation and Scooter Libby, Cheneys assistant, going to jail for lying about it)? They see bullshit like that and go crazy. I'll hold my breath and cross my fingers that Obama can pull this one off, but I expect otherwise based strictly on his past experiences as I detailed elsewhere. Many social programs, like welefare, are one way to toss your money down the toilet. (Not all, some, like early childhood education are great investments) On occasion it does do good and eases the conscious as well. In the old days you could choose who you thought was worthy. Now the government tells you who they think that is, then they demand your money and toss it over there for you. I think that the politicians thought tossing the money into Iraq was an investment. One I opposed when they first did it, but now think we need to work out and stay until we can get out with at least one asscheek. I've been swimming upsteam on that one the entire time as public opinion % shifted from overwhelmingly positive wholehearted public support to derision and anger. BTW, not necessarily an investment that worked out good - but they perceived it as an investment when they went in. So fucking stupid and wasteful.

Exactly, however, those things come with a long list of other baggage as well which normal folks often have troubles with. I have hopes that with a reduced military spending list Obama can get our economy back on track and gov't spending under control.....but it's an unfounded hope. I suspect the dems will exchange military spending for domestic social program spending and we will continue to sink as a country from the burden of big government. Whether he gets a 2nd term, or a "new Reagan" appears and takes it away from the dems, will depend on that very thing IMO. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.
