first winter ascent [TR] Mt Buckner- North Face 2/20/2004
skykilo replied to TeleRoss's topic in North Cascades
Sorry you had to miss out, you overweight desk monkey. I'm sure you found some trouble yourself over the weekend though, eh? Here's a picture of Ross from the ski: -
It would be pretty fucked if you had some snow between your beacon and your chest and your beacon gave up on you. Etc, etc. Sorry to trash your idea, it's always easier to bring 'em down than to create.

Hey man, sick flicks. I got nothing against snowboarders. I was just taking issue with the jump turn statement (Thus three pictures of jump turns). And I'll live up to the dinner and drinks. Eveyone have a great weekend!

I have nothing to bitch about, but I would like to point this out... This guy was clearly in over his head. This guy too And what was this chump thinking? There is a proper place for everything, and the proper place for snowboarders who are learning to scrape the snow off steeps would be in a resort. 'Nuff said. I would like to treat anybody who skis one of these routes without jump turns, or any snowboarder who rides one of these routes at all, to a nice dinner and a few drinks. Cheers, Sky

Justin- I'd be more than happy to do something unfun with you, seeing that is my specialty. Or even better, have Jeff take you somewhere. Ha ha.

Nice one. I saw your tracks along the top of the ridge from high on the Reid HW today and that alone got me super stoked.

Call the fahkin WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAmbulance, Winter rules, we got a bomber weather window here, and you're still bitchin' about it. I don't wanna hear some shit about school-skip a day. Spring's gonna rule even more. AHhhh yeah.

Did you rap at the col below the descent gully? Sweet sweet sweet, glad to hear I'm not the only one getting the goodness on that descent gully. The section below that to the south was good skiing, too. Quite a detour for the extra skiing, but probably not as bad heading back over Pineapple Pass instead of Melakwa like we did. Right on guys.

I didn't read all the above posts. Is there an echo in here? Is there a reason you can't get G3's, goddess? Methinks yes.
-
I had Clipfix and I think you'd do just as well to not put anything on the tail, maybe even better since a little metal clip wouldn't be pulling the skin off when it fails. I have the G3's right now, and I must say I think they kick ass. The adjustment system is more versatile, and can adjust for expansion and contraction of the skins.

That's happened to me before, on Sixth Street in Austin. WTF. They had big guns, so I just kinda went along with it. So I guess my answer to you, Lummox, is yes. It didn't sit well with me, but I did tolerate it.

Norm: Whippets are faithful and noble beasts, so I take them instead of my whiny red nosed pit. It is easy to jam their pointy faces into holes in the ice for good leverage. They are also good for cuddling for warmth during the emergency bivy. Tom: Jeff parked across the street from one of the upper Alpental lots. I have a season pass there, so I refuse to consider their policies applicable to me. Besides, I was just looking for an interesting line in the Alpental BC. Another day at the resort. Bug: In similar conditions, I would have no qualms at all about free soloing the route, but would take two tools if that was my intent. That's just me, I'm not making any recommendations for anyone else. Great touring today, it feels like spring will be here soon enough...

I can't imagine why Gib Chute wouldn't be fine for skis... I guess this calls for an investigation.

Here are a few of Jeff's pics: sunrise checking out east face side of NE buttress placing a screw on upper section of NE buttress coming out of a jump turn that helped convince me not to ski the buttress part of that sweet descent gully

Climb: Chair Peak-Northeast Buttress Date of Climb: 2/5/2004 Trip Report: Crazy_Jeff and I climbed the Northeast Buttress of Chair Peak. It is in great climbing condition, but not so great skiing condition. There are two sections of nice mixed/ice climbing, and almost all of it has released a huge slab leaving a hard crust. Two tools might be the way to go, but I was able to lead it with a whippet, one tool, and one screw. More screws might have been nice, but what's the point if there's no trustworthy ice? I skied the top pitch, but decided it was stupid icy so we climbed back up and I skied a sweet couloir to the south(east?), which Jeff downclimbed. After many wrong turns and some interesting downclimbing, we were able to reach the valley and climb to Melakwa Pass as daylight waned. The ski down to Snow Lake in the dark was marvellous. Snow conditions on north and east slopes seemed to be hoar frost over some nice powder, simply great skiing. All aspects were good in the Alpental valley due to death fog effects. Other aspects had some degree of wind crust elsewhere. Crossing the lake, we were immersed in the Snoqualmie Pass death fog, but I was able to find the divide without any problems. It felt good to meet Corey at the parking lot for tea after a much-longer-than-expected day. Too bad it was too late to hit the pool and sauna. This was a really fun climb, and the couloir we descended was a spectacular ski. Sorry for all the beta and chestbeating. Thank you for allowing physicist skier to post. Someday a distant website in a galaxy far, far away will have a more thorough trip report with pictures. Gear Notes: Shoulda had brain. Approach Notes: Very easy approach. Do it with skis, foos.

Bad weather sloggers unite?

jpeg->jpg should do the trick there.

I once had a jacket made out of Tyvek. That thing was pretty damn waterproof.

Congratulations, welcome to the club. I was thinking of getting a "Big Johnson" style t-shirt made... It's easy to rip through the skanky manky deep wet when you're wielding a Big Stick .
-
Maybe you can both STFU before I start making a concerted effort to post photos of you looking like shit on skis.
-
Hey, I like the way you think.
-
Oh yeah, and not too fat. You want your foot to be on top of your edges, not far away and creating lots of torque.
-
For steep couloirs, etc., it's best that the ski be somewhat short for maneuverability if you think you'll get in tight spots. You don't want too much sidecut, because you want to get good grip from a significant portion of your edge on really steep slopes, especially if they're icy. Stiff can be good, too. These are just my opinions, and nothing more.

I haven't taken any HUGE air with my Dynafits, but I'm confident I could. If you're really worried about twisting release in a situation, you can always lock the toe piece into tour mode. Also, I'm not sure why the toe would break; isn't it made of stainless steel? They've treated me great so far skiing aggressively on hardpack, crust, concrete, and fluffy powder... The bozo in this picture is wearing Dynafits, and he landed and skied away with no problems. On another note, I've had trouble with Fritschis releasing on smaller jumps because the flex of the ski allows them to inadvertently change into tour mode. That hasn't been a problem for me with my Fritschis on the stiffer Big Stix, though.

Bueller, anyone?
