  1. Good stuff Thanks for the great report and pictures.
  2. Found Climber's Guide to the Olympic Mountains book today in the Buckhorn Wilderness. Let me know if it is yours and where you left it and I will mail it to you.
  3. According to the park service morning report they made it out ok. Link
  4. I have not been up Mt. Washington for years but we went up there on Washington's birthday many many years ago. It looks like it was beautiful up there. I don't know which one is my favorite but I like Mt. Buckhorn. It is mostly a hike but there some good views. I like Moose Peak also and it is really a hike but the views on a nice day are outstanding.
  5. Nice pictures. I give up. Where were they taken?
  6. That looks like fun. Thanks for the trip report and pictures.
  7. I just ran across this. I did not really know Chet Ullin but I did talk to him a couple of times. Ira Spring has a little information about him in his book "An Ice Axe, A Camera and A Jar of Peanut Butter". At one time there was a Boy Scout Camp at Lower Lena Lake called Camp Cleland and Chet was on the staff there when the Spring brothers attended the camp. It is on page 23 and 24 in the book. Also I have read or heard that Chet had something to do with building the Great Stone Arrow at the saddle above Hagen Lakes on the ridge that runs from Mt. Hopper to Mt. Stone. I thought Ira might talk about it in his book but I cannot find it. Wood might mention it in his trail guide. I will have to check.
  8. Here is a link to David's trip report on Mt. Baker that John referred to. RIP David
  9. Are you talking about the print version or the online version of the guide? This quote is from the Olympic Mountain Rescue website.
  10. That looked like fun. Let me know if you need more canisters as I have a few around here I need to get rid of. The ones I have are Primus cannisters and I didn't see any of those in the video.
  11. I was just on a hike on the North Fork of the Skokomish River and it seems to me like a good trail run would be to run up the North Fork of the Skokomish River to First Divide then to Home Sweet Home to the Upper Duckabush and out the Duckabush River Trail. It could be done either direction.
  12. No one is talking about a new road except you. What we are talking about is repairing a road that has been there since at least the 1930's. I think people should be able to have access to their National Park.
  13. I believe Upper Lena Lake, Mt. Stone and Lake of the Angels are in Olympic National Park. Mt. Townsend is in the Buckhorn Wilderness of Olympic National Forest. I will be glad when they repair the Dosewallips River Road so it will be possible to drive to Muscott Flat again. I think you are right that not many have accessed Queets Basin by hiking up the Queets River but here is a link to a report by someone that did it. Link It sounds like quite the adventure and there is nothing stupid about it.
  14. Wow, nice report and pictures. There was a plane crash in that area in 1975. Link
  15. Here is a trip that looks like it would be a lot of fun but it might be better when there is still some snow around. Link There is a bridge out on the lower Gray Wolf River Trail. I don't know how easy it is to ford and there may be a log or you could start at Slab Camp.
  16. Take a look at this Pargeter Map. It shows the peaks and names them. It might be just what your Grandma is looking for. Hope this helps.
  17. I left my water filter at Gravel Lake. This is near Kendall Catwalk. If it is still there it is down at the campsite just above the lake under some trees. You get to this campsite by taking the path down from near Ridge Lake.
  18. Looking there from Bremerton my best guess is that there is no new snow at this time.
  19. Give it a rest. This is a trip report not the access forum.

    Body of War

Is anyone going to see Phil Donahue's movie "Body of War"? He has footage in there about Senator Byrd's opposition to the war. I don't know if he includes anything about Senator Murray's vote against the war resolution but she voted against it. She made a great speech on the senate floor explaining why she was voting against it and in the speech predicted many of the problems we ran into there. It is too bad more people did not listen to her. Link to Senator Murray's Speech
  21. Panorama from Ruth with Labels Place the cursor over the photo to see the labels.
  22. Thank you for posting that report. It was an interesting read especially since it included 2 former Bremertonions, Arnold Bloomer and Neal Jacques who were involved with the Olympic College Climbing Course when I took it in the 50's and also I believe were in the High Climbers Club at Bremerton High School.
  23. This is from Climber's Guide to the Cascade and Olympic Mountains by Fred Beckey Copyright 1949 by The American Alpine Club. This is what Fred writes in the front in a short section titled Mountaineering Hints "Some rock routes are classified as to their degree of difficulty, not to encourage competition, but to discourage the inexperienced from attempting ascents beyond their ability. Using the Welzenbach system, class 3 is moderately difficult, requiring the use of the rope and some belaying; class 4 requires soft-soled shoes and continual belays; class 5 adds the use of pitons for safety, and for direct aid in class 6." Fred lists Mt. Cruiser in the Olympic Mountains as a class 4. His ratings for Forbidden Peak in the North Cascades is class 4 for route 1 and class 4/5 for route 2. I don't know which routes these are. Chimney Rock in the Cascades is listed as class 4. Interesting, there is no class listing for Mt. Constance in the Olympics. There is a listing of class 3 and 4 rock work for some of the stuff in The Needles in the Olympics. Just glancing through it seems that he did not rate much in the Olympics. As far as I can tell Fred's guide covered the entire Olympics. At the time the guide was written there was still some unclimbed peaks so they probably are not in there. There are some fairly obscure peaks that are included however like Mt. Gladys and Mt. Townsend. I have not seen the latest edition of the Olympic Mountain Guide but some of the entrys in the edition that I have are quoted directly from Beckey's Guide. I suspect that may still be the case but have not checked it. Hope this helps.
  24. How about Mt. Hoquiam or Discovery Peak?
  25. How about Diamond Mountain?
