  1. I've spent the night out in the middle of February by the American River with nothing other than matches, 20ft of rope, and wool pants and jacket. I made a lean-to out of a fallen tree, covered the floor with pine needles and started a fire in the snow, with wet wood. I was able to find a tin can and boiled some water in it over the fire for water. It was part of a wilderness survival course I took and I was miserable most of the night, but survived none the less. It's all about keeping it together mentally and getting out of the elements. You should be able to make a fire in any conditions, rain or snow. There's almost always going to be dry wood on the underside of a fallen log in any conditions. It just a matter of determination.
  2. Sounds like fun. Hmmmmm........ When you leaving?
  3. Telemarkski.com has some fat skins for $99. I just picked some up myself and thought I let everyone else know (if anyone cares). Cheap Fat Skins
  4. Edited previous post.
  5. REI is having a Pakistan Relief Drive from Dec 15-29 and there is a kick off party and auction tomorrow at 7:00pm. Jim Wickwire, Jim Whittaker, and Steve Swenson are supposedly going to be present there at the flagship store downtown. Not sure if someone else posted this or not. REI Pakistan Relief
  6. Sounds like there's some good interest in going out this week. So, again here are the details: Meet at 3:00pm on Thursday night Dec 15th at the Issaquah P&R between Maple Street and NW Newport Way (exit 15 off of I-90 I believe) and we'll head up from there. We usually meet in the Southeast corner near the NW Newport Way entrance and are hanging around with ice tools and packs visible. PDX Dry Tool Thread for what to bring and other info (note: for gear information only!!) <timmay!> <and the lords of the underworld!>
  7. Makes me glad I don't carry cash.
  8. For sure, I don't have my WIG on hand and can't recall if there is any advice on where to stay the night. Any camping, cheap motels, and/or antique shops to keep the little lady occupied??
  9. I would say CBS is correct on this point. I've been climbing off and on around here since the early nineties and had my peak just out of high school many years back. I would say that since I have pretty much climbed with a small group of people that I don't have the experience that I would really like to have. But I think that could be said for most any hobby. For instance, every guitar player I have ever met, no matter how good, always bashes themselves about how much they suck or whatnot.
  10. Looks like the weather is going to be relatively decent this week. Is everyone (or anyone for that matter) willing to do the trudge up to the crag again Thursday night?
  11. A guiness sounds good.
  12. What time and where, ya'll?
  13. Sometime this week would be good. Going to try to hit the PubClub tomorrow and Dry Tool night on Thursday, so that leaves Wednesday and Friday for possibilities. Again, I don't have a beacon, but will have one soon and need a bit of a refresher with the new gear out there now.
  14. Urban legend? Not urban legend, it used to be 1692 when I had it a few (and I mean few) years back while in the boyscouts. Not sure if it has been changed since then or not. Have not had the need to try it out.
  15. I was driving to and from Alpental this weekend and was wondering if anyone else see that drip that is about 20-25 feet off the railroad grade on the cliff up the valley from the eastern trestle.
  16. Yeah, I've read that there's plenty to have over there right now. Gonna make a trip soon, maybe next weekend, wanna go for a ride??
  17. Pretty thin and definately some melting going on today up at Alpental Falls. It was definately above freezing after the sun hit the ice and some of it started to come down just before we took off. Was able to get in a lead on the first pitch of Alp I as well and what I believe is Alp III. Pretty thin, so thou must head east young lads.
  18. Hopefully, cause I'm still planning on going.
  19. For real. Errr....Maybe have to get up higher this weekend to find some goodies.
  20. I could use some beacon practice, too. Don't have my own beacon yet, but I can play a buried died guy pretty well.
  21. Man, good read. I couldn't have said better myself. Cheers to a great life and inspiration for getting out there and doing it.
  22. I used to work with 2 other guys and 25 women at my last job and they used to talk about all sorts of unmanly things. Did not bother me too much until my boss went into detail about some sexual experiences she had when she was in college. Did not want to go there!!
