  1. Eh, I don't think the guy deserved to get tazed either, even if the officer had that option. As FW pointed out, he wasn't breaking the law carrying a 3" wood carving knife. I'm only speculating, but I seriously doubt the officer even had a justifiable reason for engaging the guy in the first place. It sure doesn't sound like he was threatening anybody with that knife. The cop had 2 years experience - that is hardly a veteran, that is a rookie, and it sure seems like he committed a rookie mistake and the situation quickly escalated from there. In the end though, he should be punished not for being a bad cop but for being a murderer, which is what he is, IMHO of course.
  2. Which is why we need full electrics ASAP! The benefits go far beyond simply reducing fossil fuel use. An all electric drivetrain can be made far more simplistic than a hybrid or IC drivetrain. You can also do away with the obnoxious maintenance of IC components - engine oil, filters, belts, plugs, etc. The Nissan Leaf is coming out soon, and I'm hoping it is a big success. I'm also hoping my clunker can keep running long enough that I can buy an all electric replacement when it finally bites the dust. In the mean time, if I absolutely had to buy another car, I'd probably go with some sort of clean diesel. They all have their downsides, but given the choices, I think that is currently the best bet.
  3. Yeah, I'd say your 4 minute reply was pretty indicative of troll success, FW. Also, not sure where you get "fuck the trial" out of "screw the internal investigation". Internal investigations and court trials are not the same thing...
  4. If only I had brought a better laptop on this trip I could keep myself more easily entertained. Unfortunately these netbooks with Atom processors aren't very good for games...
  5. ...whose residents have two Democrat Senators in DC, I might add. Which should serve as a pretty good indication of just how sorry the turds the GOP of Montana dragged up for candidates were, wouldn't you say?
  6. Posted that specifically to troll you after I saw you were active in the forum. Damn it's too easy... But in all seriousness, he is a murderer, plain and simple, cop or not.
  7. I remember hearing about this when it happened. Has there been any followup? Screw internal investigations, fucking murdering pig should be thrown in jail for life.
  8. Lets get a helicopter, a bunch of steel cable and set up a zip-line from one of the summits down to the highway. That should make the descent pretty sweet.
  9. Yeah, I read his account online and recalled him being self critical of the decision making that resulted in the accident. It was a really good (and useful) writeup because I could see making those decisions, feeling the extra sense of security from people nearby. As somebody who goes out solo quite often, if I think there is a chance of getting cell service, at this point I will generally take my phone. I would like to think I don't let this give me a false sense of security, but who knows, maybe I'm subconsciously fooling myself?
  10. I hadn't seen this yet, so thanks for the link. From personal experience, I can say this is indeed true. Thankfully I've never had to use a cell phone for emergency purposes, but for a while I used mine a music player so I generally had it with me. In several locations I was unable to get a good enough signal to complete a call successfully, but with some patience I was able to dispatch and receive text messages during the brief periods of good signal from a summit or high point. This allowed me to get a weather update from a friend once and another time ask somebody to feed my cat while I was gone. Cell phone reception is also highly variable between carriers. In several instances I have seen Verizon get a signal when other carriers have not. Recently I saw the opposite happen for the first time: Verizon was not getting a signal while another carrier was. I can think of one time where my cell phone came in very handy not to contact SAR, but to make sure SAR was *not* contacted. The descent from Mt. Index was taking longer than expected so we used a cell phone to call family and let them know we were fine but were going to bivy another night. However, this is a rather special case because we took the phone specifically because we knew Mt. Index was within the cell service area and was notorious for lengthy descents. The incidents where cell phones were used highlighted in your article seem to fall in to two categories in my mind. In the case of the Mt. Terror rescue from last year, it seems a cell phone played a very key role helping a party do a great job recovering from a random accident that befell them. Indeed it was an important tool for them to use. In the avalanche incidents (Crystal Mt. and Granite Mt.), at least from the armchair perspective, it seems the phones may have given a false since of security and allowed the individuals to bail themselves out after making poor decisions that led to them requiring help.

    Liberal Tricks!

    LOLOLOLOL... Conservapedia: liberal tricks
  12. FAs my arse! The previous climbers just didn't need fancy tools...flipflops and boardshorts only.
  13. Ha, can't even post a video of some random small town no-name fringe candidate freaking out (who just happens to be a Republican) without FW going all republican-defensive-turrets-mode.
  14. Mother Gaia is weeping!!
  15. This is so much cooler than all those shitty TRs with words. P.S. Audio works fine playing embedded but if you "play at youtube" the glenn beck loving nazi bastards mute it.
  16. Right on man, great TR! That ridge looks like nature's perfect alpine sidewalk.
  17. Over...sadly. I just hope it transitions to ski season quickly. None of this in-between crap.
  18. Lot of personal preferences in ropes, so you'll likely get some different suggestions, but my pick would be to go with some nice light double ropes if you are primarily on ice. They generate less impact force in the event of a fall, and give the option of making double rope rappels for climbs you cannot walk off. The last ropes for ice I bought were Beal Ice Line (8.1mm I think?),and I liked those, but I'm sure many companies make a nice comparable light double rope. This probably goes without saying, but get two different colors that stand apart well. Most of the double ropes will be available like this anyway.
  19. I knew somebody must have been out hunting for turns when I saw that "1 to 3 feet of snow" in the Mt. Rainer rec forecast!
  20. Wow...
  21. I agree, we sat there in awe of the two giants that tower above the beginning of the climb. It takes almost two entire long pitches to pass the tops of them. How nice a spring at the crag is, and a belay in flowers and some sweet smelling herb as opposed to dust. And the perfect belay seat evergreen 3 pitches up. It's all very elven... And the view of the verdant N Fork Sauk river valley the entire time

  23. BUMP. We did "Other Side of the Tracks Today" and were very impressed, so I wanted to give this thread a bump! Nice work by the folks who did all the scrubbing and bolting. From the bottom it looked liked it might be mossy, but all the holds you needed were clean, and the climbing was steep on great rock. The little spring at the base of the cliff is a nice bonus, along with two gorgeous old growth trees right near the the start of the route. This cliff was a great find. * * * * *
  24. Phew, thank god google images can't find any images of Christians being violent...
