  1. Neither of them if the weather is good and I expect easy navigation. GPS if I expect weather might turn or I'll need to do some navigation.
  2. those people that survived the storm up on liberty ridge rapped into a crevasse for shelter if I recall.
  3. This isn't a "climbing" record...it's a marathon record. It has nothing whatsoever to do with climbing. If cavedog wanted a competition he'd invite some kenyan's over to race against him and get his ass kicked.
  4. Actually, it is the floor staff which is making more than they are worth, since their salary is artificially inflated by the minimum wage. The "corporate types" are paid what they are worth. If REI systematically overpaid HQ staff, they would be unable to compete with other retailers. Yah, lets get rid of the minimum wage. Clearly we need more incentives for companies to underpay their workers and boost CEO comps. The "corporate types" are not paid what they are worth, they are vastly overpaid. The overpaid (and vastly overvalued) CEO is a product of the 90s and 2000s economy. The amount these guys get is more vastly out of whack with what they are worth compared to any other time in history. You "no minimum wage" idiots crack me up. Just because you don't think you'd be exploited without one doesn't mean it doesn't have value.
  5. You guys take flame bait too easily. I'm all for fast n' light. I'd much rather do something in a day if I can. Sometimes I slow it down to take a break from the death marchs, but I agree, the lighter the better. It makes things so much more tolerable. A 10 mile approach with 50 pounds is utter hell. With a light pack and light shoes, it's a few hours and ain't bad at all.
  6. Yeah, I'd love to climb it, it's just a matter of finding the time. I plan to go up fortress tomorrow so hopefully I'll get some good looks!
  7. Yeah, snow on a climb known for it's great slab pitchs...tons of fun

    Photo of a puppy

Damn, that's pretty sweet. A puppy is probably one thing you'll find on the apalachin trail that you won't find on the PCT.
  9. So is bonanza an enjoyable climb? I'm thinking you must think so since you're planning on doing it a second time. Everybody I know who has done it seems to think it's just a horrible pile of choss. I've always had an interest, however, considering it's tallest-non-volcano status and it's remote location.

    Weekend Weather

good advice from eric8. saturday looks like great weather and an awesome day to summit glacier peak and see the views. glacier peak can be done in a day by a reasonably fit climber. I'm not sure of your skills in the mountains, but most climbers from the rockies (no offense meant here) don't have the skills nescessary to navigate on glaciers when the weather turns bad. If you can, you won't have a problem. If you can't, sunday might be a very unpleasent day to be on a volcano should visibility drop. Even if the weather isn't particularly harsh, it's amazing how much everything looks and feels the same with 30 feet of visibility and nothing but snow and ice around.
  12. Yo. Looking to try some sort of lightweight mountaineering boot. I've got my trail runners, which are great, but too whimpy for some stuff. Then I've got my full shank leather climbing boots which I am really loathe to wear on anything requiring a large amount of trail travel for fear of destroying my feet. Some of these lighter weight partial shank mountaineering boots look like a great solution. Anybody have any suggestions? I'm seeing thngs like they kayland multi traction and sportiva trango S. Both look cool. Oh, and another thing...I wouldn't be using them in winter obviously.
  13. Huh, I've found a GPS very useful for quick navigation is subpar weather. Relying on it solely is a mistake, but used properly I think they can be great for a navigation tool. I was extremely happy to have one on the ptarmigan traverse a few weeks ago when the weather turned to shit. We certainly could have made our way with compass and map, but the GPS made things very very fast. I would say we probably traveled at 95% of the speed we would have in clear weather. Pretty good for moving over a few fairlly nondescript glaciers.
  14. If you are compentent you can get up and down in a day easiliy. You'll have to leave seattle a bit earlier (maybe drive down the night before) but that's all. may be better than skiing with overnight weight.
  15. I couldn't believe the difference 3 weeks made in the brush in upper bachelor creek. from bare and fairly easy to whack through to completely sprouted and thick as molasses.
  16. What did you have in mind?
  17. or just do it car-to-car. It's really not that bad. The nice thing is trail hikers can be worn for the entire length of the approach which really makes it just a trail run with a climb in the middle. Kind of a neat way to do it.
  18. 1.) Dixie chicks, landslide. They didn't even change the song much like smashing pumpkins did, they just sung it the same with their shitty dixie bitch voices.
  19. Yeah, saturday ain't so bad. Was hoping to do something alpine and 2 days. The whole SL dropping to 5k thing is annoying tho, I like using my whimpy sleeping bag *and* not freezing.

    Treailhead Break Ins

Might not, but my troll worked now didn't it? hehehe Yes, that it did. It might, however, be kind of fun to hang out high above a commonly theived parking lot armed with a sniper rifle. Is the cascade pass lot hit a lot? Imagine taking aim at fools from high atop cascade pass.

    Treailhead Break Ins

Greg, please explain to me how arming yourself is going to prevent your car from getting broken into while you are up in the hills?
  23. .SYNOPSIS...AN UPPER LEVEL RIDGE OF HIGH PRESSURE WILL BUILD OVER THE REGION TODAY THROUGH THURSDAY. A COOL SHOWERY UPPER LEVEL TROUGH OF LOW PRESSURE WILL DROP OVER THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST NEXT WEEKEND. great weather during the work week and shitty for the weekend. Why does this still surprise me?
  24. I found that hauling skis up frostbite ridge was the only thing that made it tolerable. Having to slog down the sitkum glacier and boulder basin would have been misery!
